The sudden demise of legendary singer-composer, Zubeen Garg has shaken Assam and the entire nation. Known as the ‘heartthrob of the Northeast,’ Zubeen passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, at the age of 52, reportedly due to drowning. His untimely death has left a void in India’s music industry, with fans and colleagues remembering him as one of the most versatile artists of his generation.
Zubeen Garg’s family files a complaint with Assam CID
In the latest development, Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia, his sister, Palme Borthakur, and his uncle, Manoj Kumar Borthakur, have filed a complaint with the Assam CID. The family has demanded a ‘thorough probe’ into the circumstances of his death. Manoj confirmed to PTI that the complaint was sent via email. He said that they want a thorough probe into the circumstances of Zubeen’s death.
The Assam police also confirmed receiving the complaint and assured that it will be taken up by the Special Investigating Team (SIT), which is already looking into the case. On Sunday, the SIT team visited Zubeen’s Guwahati residence to record the family’s statement, further intensifying the investigation.
SIT investigation and raids regarding Zubeen Garg’s death
The CID’s SIT has been actively probing the matter since September 19, 2025. Recently, the team raided the homes of Zubeen’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, fellow musician, Sekhar Jyoti Goswami, and festival organiser, Shyamkanu Mahanta. During the raids, several items, including a hard disk, a pendrive, a CPU, and documents, were seized.
Authorities have also issued look-out notices against Siddharth and Shyamkanu, directing them to appear before the CID in Guwahati by October 6, 2025. Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has warned that the police will take strict action if they fail to cooperate.

Interestingly, just a week before the family’s complaint, Zubeen’s wife, Garima released a video appealing for all FIRs against his manager, Siddharth Sharma to be withdrawn. She stressed that Siddharth had been an integral part of Zubeen’s professional life and that she needed his support to carry forward the singer’s unfinished work. She could be quoted as saying:
“I request everyone to set aside negative thoughts about Siddharth… Zubeen has many unfinished tasks, and I cannot complete them alone.”

Zubeen’s music transcended boundaries, blending Assamese folk with Bollywood hits, and his charismatic presence made him a cultural icon. After his passing, Zubeen’s body was flown from Singapore to Delhi and later transported to Guwahati. Thousands gathered for his final rites, held on September 23, 2025, at Kamarkuchi village in Assam, marking a farewell befitting a cultural hero.
Zubeen Garg’s legacy goes beyond music, he was a symbol of Assamese pride, a voice for the Northeast, and an artist who touched millions across India and beyond. His acts of philanthropy were something that had inspired the entire nation. Through his charity, the Kalaguru Artiste Foundation, he contributed generously to social causes, such as flood relief and healthcare.
During the annual floods in Assam, he often urged people to donate clothing, medicines, and funds for affected families. He even participated in charity football matches to raise money for relief efforts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he selflessly offered his two-storey residence in Guwahati to be converted into a COVID Care Centre when hospitals struggled with bed shortages. His family’s demand for a probe highlights their quest for truth, as fans continue to remember him through his timeless songs.
