Assam has not yet come to terms with the loss of its beloved, iconic singer, Zubeen Garg. His voice touched the lives of millions until his untimely demise in a tragic scuba diving accident at Singapore on September 19, 2025. In his last interview, the Ya Ali singer revealed that he loved the sea and was deeply fond of swimming. Zubeen deeply reflected on his life, responsibilities, creative ideas and also the sea.
Zubeen Garg, who drowned in the sea, in his last interview, spoke about his love for swimming
Zubeen’s last podcast was with novelist and author, Rita Chowdhury, which went viral instantly. Zubeen, in the podcast, used the ocean as a metaphoric reference related to finding direction and discovering oneself in life. The 52-year-old singer, who drowned while swimming in his final interview, shared about how he wanted in his next life to be Zubeen Garg. He also revealed his love for the sea, being a dead end. The late singer had said:
“But I want to be born as Zubeen Garg, more and bigger than that. I want to be bigger than this what I had. I love to swim. I never see how deep it is. I just jump. I have done it before. Five people saved me and I have recreated that in the film in Sri Lanka. There is nothing in sea. You just flow in the sea. It’s a dead end. I am just swimming. I will play with the waves. I love to play with the sea.”

Zubeen was known for crooning two epic songs in Bollywood. One being Ya Ali from Gangster, and the second being Jaane Kya Chahe Mann Bawra from Pyaar Ke Side Effects. In the interview, he addressed human emotions and shared that life is all about striking a balance between the heart and the mind while navigating uncertainty. Zubeen had also shared that in his upcoming movie, Roi Roi Binale, the sea has been the central theme as he said:
“You should come and see my next film. It starts with the sea. Ends with the sea. He wants to touch the sea and the poster is same. I touch the sea but I can’t see. I am blind. He touches the sea at the end of the film. He asks often how big is the sea?”
When Zubeen Garg shared being bored with Mumbai, and if he died in Assam, the state would be shut for seven days
It was as if Zubeen had predicted his near future, as he had shared in the interview that people needed to experiment, explore, and create while being responsible for shaping their own path. He did share that people made him a machine, as he was not like that. However, he wanted to see how many of them would come when he grew old. The late singer also shared living in Mumbai for 12 years and then being bored with city life. For him, Assam was always the kingdom, and he shared that if he passed away, his state would be shut for a week. In the words of late Zubeen da:
“I stayed in Mumbai for 12 years, I got bored of the city life. People ask me why I don’t live in Mumbai? I said, ‘A king should never leave his kingdom. There is no king there. When Lata Mangeshkar died, did they do anything? No. When Rajesh Khanna died, there was just news – Rajesh Khanna died. There is no king. But if I die here in Assam, Assam will remain closed for 7 days.'”
