In recent times, the genre of horror-comedy seems to have clicked really well with the theatre-going audience. All of this started with Rajkumar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s 2018 film, Stree , becoming a blockbuster hit. As a result, Maddock Films isn’t just expanding the franchise with Stree 2 and 3, they are building their own cinematic Universe. In the trailer launch of their latest offering in this universe, Thama, Shraddha Kapoor confirmed that Chhoti Stree will be dropping soon.

Shraddha Kapoor confirms Maddock Films’ next film, Chhoti Stree

At the trailer launch event for Thama, the latest Maddock horror-comedy film, Shraddha Kapoor revealed that the production house is working on a spin-off of the Stree franchise, titled Chhoti Stree. This spin-off is going to be an animated film and a family entertainer. Shraddha shared her reaction when producer, Dinesh Vijan told her about Chhoti Stree and said:

“When Dinoo told me about it, I said, Sach mein aapka naam Dinesh Vision hi hona chahiye!”

Chhoti Stree will set the backdrop for Stree 3

Dinesh Vijan revealed that Chhoti Stree isn’t just going to be a spin-off of the Stree franchise. Instead, it will set the backdrop for Stree 3. The upcoming film will also give the backstory of ‘Stree’ and on to the ongoing lore of the films. The producer also stated that, although Chhoti Stree will be an animated film, the final scene will transition to live-action and will feature a scene from Stree 3. The animated film will also be released six months before Stree 3 hits the cinemas. Hence, fans of the Maddock Cinematic Universe will have to watch this spin-off to connect the dots. Dinesh Vijan said:

“The most exciting part is that Chhoti Stree will end with a scene from Stree 3. It’ll transition from animation to live-action, and also answer the question, Stree ki backstory kya hai?”

    More about the Stree franchise

Stree, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, became one of the highest-grossing films of 2018, earning Rs. 180 crores worldwide. This film came to dominate the niche genre of horror comedy, which had remained unexplored in Hindi cinema, except for the blockbuster Bhool Bhulaiya. Following Stree‘s success, Maddock Films has continued to create successful hits in this genre, one after another. From Bhediya to Munjya and Stree 2, the production house made its own cinematic universe with all the films connected to each other.

Maddock Films’ latest offering is Thama, starring Rashmika Mandanna, Ayushmann Khurrana and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. This film is going to explore the folklore centred around Vampires, making it interesting to see how it connects to the other three horror comedy films from the production house. Coming back to the Stree franchise, the second instalment introduced a new antagonist, ‘Sar Kataa’. The post-credit scenes have hinted that the same antagonist will be back to terrorise the small town of Chanderi, with possibly Akshay Kumar playing the role.
