He celebrates his 43rd birthday on September 28, the day Lata Mangeshkar was born. And like Lata, Ranbir Kapoor is special. Very special! Why do we say that? It is simply because he has made a chain of ‘Special Appearances’ himself. And (forget multi-star movies Raajneeti and Animal), a chain of special names all have made equally ‘Special Appearances’ in many a Ranbir Kapoor movie.
Ranbir Kapoor turns 43: A ‘Special’ star surrounded by ‘Special’ appearances
Special Cameos by Stars
Let us begin with Ranbir’s debut film, Saawariya. Salman Khan played a key guest role in it, linked with Sonam Kapoor, Ranbir’s heroine. Two films on, in Ranbir’s fourth film and first big hit, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Salman did a cameo again, this time as himself.
Shah Rukh Khan also touched Ranbir’s films twice: once in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and later in Ranbir’s co-production, Brahmastra—Part 1: Shiva. The latter film also had a cameo by Nagarjuna and an uncredited appearance by Deepika Padukone in the shadows.
As we all know, Ranbir was director Rajkumar Hirani’s visionary choice to essay Sanjay Dutt in the latter’s biopic, PK. And what was interesting is that the senior actor played himself only in a cameo in that film! (Sanjay, incidentally, was Ranbir’s antagonist in another film, Shamshera, but in the featured negative lead.)
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar had Kartik Aaryan in a cameo as Ranbir’s girlfriend’s fake boyfriend. And Bobby Deol, in a short cameo in the last part of Animal could be said to be in a ‘Special Appearance’ even though it was billed as a featured role.
And none other than Madhuri Dixit-Nene made a special cameo in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in the song ‘Ghagra’ with Ranbir.
When Ranbir was ‘Special’
Ranbir, however, had his own share of ‘Special Appearances’. As himself, he paid a video tribute to his late father, Rishi Kapoor, in the latter’s last film, Sharmaji Namkeen. Ranbir was himself also in Govinda Naam Mera in a song and was just a voice reciting poetry in Fuddu (2016) but had a proper cameo in Love per Square Foot (2018).
In 2014, he made two special appearances: While in Bhoothnath Returns, Ranbir played himself again, in PK, he made an endearingly cute appearance in the final sequence with Aamir Khan as an alien!
Last but not the least, probably reciprocating Madhuri Dixit-Nene’s gesture of working on his song, ‘Ghagra’, he made a special appearance (as himself) in her Marathi debut, Bucket List, as well.
The ‘ensemble’ man
That said, Ranbir Kapoor has had male co-stars father Ajay Devgn, Nana Patekar, Arjun Rampal and Naseeruddin Shah (Raajneeti), Rishi Kapoor (Besharam), Amitabh Bachchan (Bramhastra Part One: Shiva), Anil Kapoor (Animal) and Sanjay Dutt (Shamshera) also in his ensemble films.
And his forthcoming movies, Love and War, Ramayana and the yet-to-take-off Animal Park will also feature other male stars, in ‘Special’ if not featured roles!
Truly, the Jagga Jasoos is a Rockstar in these special matters. Wishing him a superb birthday.
