Bollywood superstars Aamir Khan and Salman Khan recently appeared on Prime Video’s talk show Two Much With Kajol and Twinkle, where the conversation ranged from age differences in on-screen romances to gender dynamics in society and cinema. Hosted by Kajol and Twinkle Khanna, the show blends playful banter with thoughtful commentary. Kajol opened the discussion on age and romance in films, asking, “When the hero romances a younger woman, it’s called cinema magic. But when an older heroine romances a younger man, it’s called bold. Why do you think so?”
Salman Khan DEFENDS heroes romancing younger actresses for “freshness” in films, Aamir Khan says casting should serve the story: “Filmmaking is not real. Will you actually die for a death scene?”
Aamir responded, “For me, when I am doing a movie, I’d like to… the casting should be based on what the requirement is. Sometimes there is a requirement where there is an age difference between the two actors. It could be in Dil Chahta Hai, Akshaye and Dimple… so it really depends on the story. Filmmaking is not real, you have to understand that. Will you actually die for a death scene? It has to look right.”
Twinkle Khanna pointed out that Aamir had occasionally worked with younger heroines, and he clarified, “But did Bebo and I not look like we are together, I mean the same age.” Salman chimed in jokingly, “You did not. I did.”
The discussion then moved to the limitations faced by actresses as they age. Twinkle remarked, “Heroines by the time they turn 30, 40, they have to play the role of heroes’ mother. So there is definitely a difference.” Salman added, “Depending. Like Sridevi, if she’d have kept on working, she could have still done. Madhuri can still play if there is a role. If there is a younger girl, an upcoming star, or a star that a producer or director wants to cast… now we have done so much work that the pairing looks old, so to bring freshness in the movie, that’s when you take somebody else who you have not worked with that much. I believe… I mean, this is what my thing is.”
Kajol noted, “It doesn’t work in the opposite way, though,” prompting Salman to reflect, “But how many such scripts do you people come across? I don’t think that movie is good, and the story is really moving around something like that—an older woman and a younger man. I don’t think anyone would mind that.”
The conversation naturally broadened into gender dynamics. Twinkle commented, “It’s clearly a man’s world. What do women have to do to succeed in this world?” Salman responded with a personal anecdote, “In the kitchen, we were pushed. The chef in every hotel and house is a man.” Kajol added, “But he is getting paid for it,” while Twinkle noted, “And when you (woman) cook at home, you get nothing.”
Aamir reflected more broadly on society, saying, “In our society, we don’t treat human beings irrespective of their sexual orientation or their gender.” Twinkle joked about Salman’s films, “In Salman’s movies there is some sort of equality, because Salman shows more cleavage and legs than the heroine.”
Salman laughed, adding, “I have told the heroines to change and come back. This is how our culture is. Now you are watching a movie with your parents and grandparents, when you happen to see such scenes, you do feel awkward. I believe that if you want people to come in their 20s and 30s, then that thing should be there. People should not feel awkward with the kind of movies you are doing. If at this age I am looking like that it will get people younger than me who are not looking like that to start looking like that. It just gives them that motivation.”
