After the historic extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting was held in Patna, the party launched a large-scale signature campaign which will continue until October 15 to gather 5 crore signatures to demand Election Commission action on vote theft. The massive drive comes ahead of the high-stakes Bihar Assembly polls in which the opposition is trying to wrest power from the ruling BJP-led NDA.
Also during the meeting, which was the first such gathering in Bihar since 1940, the Congress also launched the ‘Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan’, with 144 District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents already appointed and more to follow in the first phase across 10 states.
This is aimed at pushing grassroots reform.
The extended CWC meeting held on Wednesday was a key strategic gathering as the party gears up for the crucial Bihar elections. It was chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and attended by senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, and Jairam Ramesh.
Discussions focused on challenges facing the party at both domestic and international levels, with special emphasis on preparations for the Bihar polls and boosting Congress’s operational readiness.
The party leaders celebrated the success of the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’, which generated significant public attention, and popularised the slogan “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhodd” nationwide as a statement against alleged electoral malpractice.
They also condemned the GST 2.0 reforms as “half-baked”, arguing these were only implemented due to long-term Congress pressure, and criticised the Centre’s diplomatic failures, including global responses involving Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
The CWC also pressed for constitutional protection of 65 per cent reservation in Bihar, questioning the government’s reluctance and contrasting it with Congress’s historic support for 69 per cent reservation in Tamil Nadu.
The meeting’s special resolution called on Bihar voters to defend constitutional rights, support social justice, and ensure governance focused on transparency, welfare, and fair delivery of benefits to all citizens.
