Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has once again stirred excitement among fans by opening up about his long-cherished dream project — a screen adaptation of the Mahabharata. Calling it his “life’s most important project,” the actor-producer emphasized the magnitude and responsibility that comes with reimagining one of India’s greatest epics.
Aamir Khan shares vision for Mahabharata adaptation: “It’s not a film but a ‘yagna’”
Speaking about his vision, Aamir revealed, “Mahabharata in my mind for the last 25–30 years. My work has already started from the inside.” The actor explained that while production hasn’t begun yet, he intends to take the first steps soon. “In the next month or two, the initial writing process will start, but it is a time-consuming process. Mahabharat is not a film, it is a yagna, so you have to be prepared for that,” he said.
The actor, who has often been asked why there hasn’t been a film adaptation of the Mahabharata even as the Ramayana is being developed for the screen, explained that such a project requires more than just cinematic ambition. For him, it is a spiritual and cultural responsibility.
In an earlier conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir had shared similar thoughts, noting that the film would likely span multiple parts, much like the Lord of the Rings franchise. “I don’t think you can tell Mahabharata in one film, so it will be multiple films. I am looking at a large scale. It’s too early to say, but we may need multiple directors,” he explained, while also clarifying that the writing process alone could take several years.
Aamir also confirmed that the project would be produced under his own banner, Aamir Khan Productions. However, he has yet to decide whether he will act in the film. “We’ll see who we should cast based on who’s appropriate for which part,” he said, making it clear that authenticity and scale will define the casting choices.
With its sprawling narrative of family conflict, dharma, politics, and war, the Mahabharata has long been regarded as the most ambitious project any filmmaker could attempt. Aamir Khan’s commitment to treating it not as a mere film but as a “yagna” underscores the scale of his vision — one that could redefine Indian cinema on the world stage.
