In an interview with Komal Nahta, Aamir Khan narrated a fascinating episode on how he narrated the story of Lagaan (2001) to his parents, Tahir Hussain and Zeenat Hussain, breaking from his usual practice. He further said that he continues to apply the lesson he learned from that feedback.
Aamir Khan reveals that he had doubts about Lagaan; went against the norm and narrated script to his parents; recalls their GOLDEN words that changed his life: “Aamir, acchi kahani bahut mushkil se milti hai…”
Aamir Khan said, “I have never narrated a script to my parents in my life. The only time I made an exception was Lagaan. After Lagaan, I have narrated, but that was just for fun. It was not to get their opinion.”
He added, “During the third or fourth narration, I told them, ‘We have a story and we are confused about it. Aap bhi suniye’. So, the parents came down to my house, in Marina Apartments. Ashutosh Gowariker narrated the script. My ex-wife Reena Dutta, ammi, abba and Jhamu Sughand were present. I was observing their expressions and how they were getting affected; main dekh raha tha ki kaise unke chehre pe film chal rahi hai.”
He then said, “After the narration got over, I asked Reena for her feedback. She said, ‘I really liked the story. I can’t say ki kaunsi film karni chahiye ya nahin karni chahiye. But I liked it a lot’. Ammi and Abba also advised that I should work on the film. I asked my father, ‘Yeh bahut zyada alag toh nahin hai? It’s an expensive film; I hope it’s not too offbeat and I hope main kuch galat toh nahin kar raha hoon’. I’ll never forget what he and ammi said. They replied, ‘Aamir, acchi kahani bahut mushkil se milti hai! Ek dafa acchi kahani mil jaaye na, fir socho mat’. Golden words (smiles)!”
Aamir Khan continued, “After Lagaan, I did films like Dangal (2016), PEEPLI [Live] (2010), Delhi Belly (2011), etc. These are great stories.”
