Assamese singer Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19, 2025, during a scuba diving session in Singapore, leaving behind a legacy that transcends music. His sudden death has shocked fans across Assam and beyond.

Zubeen’s life was as remarkable as his music. He completed his matriculation at Tamulpur Higher Secondary School and pursued higher secondary education at Karimganj College.

Later, he enrolled at B Borooah College in Guwahati for a Bachelor of Science degree. However, his growing passion for music soon took centre stage.

Zubeen chose to leave college before completing his degree, dedicating himself fully to singing and composition.

This decision changed the course of his life. Garg went on to become one of the most celebrated musicians in the region and a familiar name in Bollywood.

His hit songs, including Ya Ali from the film Gangster, made him a household name and brought Assamese talent to the national spotlight.

On May 27, 2024, Garg’s contributions were formally recognised when the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), awarded him an honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree.

The university lauded him not only for his musical achievements but also for his efforts in promoting Assamese culture and mentoring young artists.

According to reports, Singapore police rescued him from the sea and rushed him to a nearby hospital. Despite being placed under intensive medical care, doctors could not save him.

Zubeen was in Singapore to attend the North East Festival, where he was scheduled to perform on September 20. His sudden death has shocked fans and the entire Assamese community, leaving a deep void in India’s music industry.

Away from the limelight, Garg’s personal life was equally significant. He married Garima Saikia, a fashion designer from Golaghat, Assam, on 4 February 2002.

Together, they worked on projects highlighting Assam’s art, culture, and traditions, supporting local talent wherever possible.
