From September 22, new GST rates will come into effect across India. While this is good news for consumers, it also means shoppers need to be extra careful when buying packaged goods.

The Department of Consumer Affairs has issued a revised advisory to make it easier for companies to implement the changes, but the system could create some confusion at local stores.

Under the new rules, manufacturers, packers, and importers may choose to stick new price labels on products made before September 22, while the old MRP will still remain visible. This could result in some products showing two MRPs—the original price and the revised GST price.

For example, a pack of biscuits that originally had an MRP of Rs 50 may now show a revised MRP of Rs 48 reflecting the new GST. A shopkeeper unfamiliar with the change may still charge Rs 50, meaning you could end up paying more than you should.

Previously, companies were asked to advertise revised MRPs in two newspapers. This step is now waived. Instead, they only need to circulate updated price lists to dealers and retailers, with copies shared with legal metrology authorities.

Old packaging can continue to be used until March 31, 2026, or until the stock runs out. MRPs on old packaging can be corrected using stickers, stamps, or even digital printing.

Manoj Mishra, Partner at Grant Thornton Bharat, said, “The government’s clarification reduces compliance burdens for businesses while still ensuring transparency for consumers. But shoppers need to double-check MRPs to make sure they benefit from the GST reduction.”

In short, the new GST rates mean lower taxes, but buyers must stay alert. Always check the MRP on the package and the bill before paying, especially at smaller shops where old prices may still be charged. Being vigilant ensures that the benefit of the GST cut reaches your pocket.
