Charlie Kirk’s assassination has sent shockwaves, leaving everyone shocked to the core. Amid this situation, Jimmy Kimmel made a comment about the same during his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which caused a stir around, leading ABC to pull the show ‘indefinitely’. It was during an episode on Monday, when Jimmy Kimmel made a controversial remark over Charlie’s brutal assassination, while criticising the ‘MAGA gang’ for politicising the same.

Such a comment didn’t go down well, and Jimmy was called out, with demands for an apology and also strict action. Amidst this, let’s take a look at when ABC had earlier taken the step of suspending Jimmy over his controversial joke. Jimmy Kimmel Live has garnered a great deal of attention with the jokes that have been pushed beyond the boundaries over the years.

Jimmy Kimmel was suspended from ABC for a week over his remarks 22 years ago

It was back in 2004, when Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about Detroit, which led ABC to suspend the host for over a week. For the unversed, Jimmy said that if the Detroit Pistons won the NBA championship, then the city would be burned down. The joke referred to the past riots in Detroit back in 1984 and 1990, after sports victories, when there had been a whole lot of damage and violence. The joke seemed to have gone too far, upsetting everyone. Jimmy could be quoted as saying:

“They’re gonna burn the city of Detroit down … and it’s not worth it.”

Soon after Jimmy Kimmel’s questionable joke, a stir was created among the locals of Detroit. Detroit’s ABC affiliate station, WXYZ-TV, decided not to air the show that night, while ABC pulled the show from its entire broadcast network. Following this, Jimmy was reportedly suspended for over a week and was required to issue a public apology, first on-air and then in a formal statement, for the insensitive comment he had made.

What did Jimmy Kimmel say about Charlie Kirk’s assassination?

Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show was about the tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. In his monologue, Jimmy Kimmel mocked the ‘MAGA gang’ and also accused them of using the tragic death for political gain. As the nation honoured Kirk by lowering the flag to half-mast, Jimmy criticised this as well, calling it immature and something like a child losing their pet rather than the loss of a conservative activist. Such comments sparked outrage, and people demanded an apology from Jimmy for his remarks while asking ABC to take strict action against him for what had happened.

Jimmy Kimmel is a famous comedian, television host, producer, and writer, who has grabbed the attention, hosting ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which first aired back in 2003. According to the reports, Jimmy was reportedly earning USD 16 million annually for hosting the show. With 170 episodes per season, he reportedly might have earned approximately USD 88,000 per show, making him one of the highest-paid hosts. According to reports, his net worth is estimated to be around USD 50-75 million, and he is also listed as the 24th highest-paid TV host of 2025 by Forbes.
