As the monsoon rains recede, Delhi-NCR is battling a sharp spike in viral illnesses. From influenza to H3N2 infections, residents across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad are reporting fevers, coughs, and respiratory issues in large numbers.

According to a LocalCircles survey with over 11,000 responses, 69% of households in Delhi NCR currently have one or more individuals experiencing Covid/flu/viral fever symptoms. Alarmingly, 37% of respondents said that four or more members of their household were ill, while only 25% reported no cases

RISE COMPARED TO EARLIER THIS YEAR

The September 2025 data shows a significant jump from March 2025, when 54% of households had reported similar viral illnesses. The latest numbers confirm that nearly seven in ten families are battling one or more flu-like cases this season

    DOMINANT STRAIN AND SEVERE CASES

Doctors have identified the H3N2 influenza A virus as the dominant strain. Unlike typical seasonal flu, which resolves in 5–7 days, recovery from the current outbreak can take up to 10 days.

Hospitals are seeing more admissions for pneumonia, bronchitis, and respiratory distress. Over-the-counter drugs like paracetamol are proving ineffective for many, leading to increased hospital consultations

    WHO IS MOST AT RISK

Medical experts caution that children, senior citizens, and those with comorbidities such as diabetes, asthma, COPD, and cardiac conditions are particularly vulnerable. Some patients have also reported gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and loose motions.

    DOCTORS URGE CAUTION

Healthcare professionals are urging residents to:

    • Maintain hygiene and wash hands frequently

    • Avoid close contact with those showing symptoms

    • Keep sick children at home

    • Refrain from taking antibiotics without medical supervision

    • While most mild fevers and colds resolve on their own, high-grade fever with complications requires medical evaluation

    A PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN

The sharp rise in viral illnesses has raised concerns among public health experts. LocalCircles has called on authorities to investigate the reasons behind the surge, including waterlogging, contaminated supplies, and weather fluctuations.

With 69% of households reporting viral symptoms, Delhi NCR is in the grip of a widespread outbreak. Doctors stress prevention, timely medical consultation, and cautious use of medicines as the region grapples with its highest seasonal flu wave in months.
