In recent times, there have been talks that the producers are indulging in self-buying of tickets; it is also referred to as ‘corporate booking’. It means that they themselves buy tickets to create a perception that their film is doing very well at the box office. The practice has often backfired and led to a lot of criticism. Yet, it continues. In an interview with Komal Nahta, superstar Aamir Khan opened up on this aspect.
Aamir Khan BREAKS silence on ‘corporate booking’: “It’s human nature that ‘main kyun bolu ki meri film nahin chal rahi hai’; according to me, it’s POINTLESS”
Aamir Khan said, “When my film releases, I believe in giving out actual collections of a film. I tell my team that we should not give out incorrect numbers. In business, I feel that it’s very silly to lie.”
He continued, “It’s human nature that ‘main kyun bolu ki meri film nahin chal rahi hai’. They feel that if the word comes out that their film is a super-hit, log usme zyada invest karenge. I feel these are short term gains. Ultimately, the truth will come out at some point.”
He added, “You might fool the public once or twice but you can’t fool the members of the industry. We are all aware of what reality is. According to me, it’s pointless but a lot of people do it. They try to create a perception.”
Last week, Komal Nahta asked about self-buying to producer Boney Kapoor and he said, “This is my opinion and I may be wrong. But I feel that OTT is responsible. Satellite is responsible. In today’s times, the contracts related to the sale of OTT and satellite rights are linked to the box office figures. As per the contracts, if a film crosses the Rs. 100 crore mark, the platforms would give an additional Rs. 5 crores to the makers. If the film goes past Rs. 120 crores, Rs. 5 crores more would be given.”
