The Honda Amaze has long been one of the most sensible entry-level sedans on sale in India, and I’m glad to report that it has joined the Auto Today long-term fleet in its top-of-the-line ZX trim. Over the coming months, we’ll be putting this compact sedan through the rigours of daily commutes, highway runs, and everything in between to see how it truly measures up. Under the hood sits Honda’s tried-and-tested 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, which is E20-compliant. The four-cylinder naturally aspirated motor develops 90bhp and 110Nm of torque, and is paired with the seven-step CVT. Interestingly, the automatic gearbox has a higher claimed fuel efficiency figure of 19.46kmpl, as opposed to the five-speed manual’s 18.65kmpl. This is one aspect we’ll be keeping a close eye on in real-world usage scenarios, given that its main rival, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, excels in this space. The ZX trim brings with it a fair dose of equipment, making the Amaze feel more premium than its entry-level positioning might suggest. The interior is equipped with a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system that gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, automatic climate control with a ‘Max Cool’ button, push-button start, a multi-information display, and electrically adjustable ORVMs.
One of the biggest advantages Amaze has compared to its rival is the Level 2 ADAS, which is a segment first. Safety-wise, the Amaze comes equipped with six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and hill start assist right from the base ‘V’ variant. Apart from this, there’s a 416-litre boot, which should serve well on weekend getaways and airport runs. The third-generation Amaze gets the new ‘Obsidian Blue’ paint job, but I quite like our test unit finished in ‘Radiant Red Metallic’. Let’s get one thing straight: this is one of Honda’s most important models in India, and that’s because the Amaze plays a crucial role in offering sedan practicality at an accessible price point. So far, its simple yet elegant dashboard layout, big-car feel on the inside and general spaciousness in the cabin have been standout features. Stay tuned as we find out how well the Honda Amaze fits into everyday life and whether it continues to justify its popularity in the compact sedan segment.
