Tension gripped Jalgaon district hospital on Wednesday after the family of a 23-year-old woman, who died by suicide just four months into her marriage, refused to accept her body until her in-laws were arrested.
The woman, identified as Mayuri Gaurav Thosar, was found hanging in her home in Sundarmoti Nagar, Jalgaon, on September 10 — a day after her birthday. She had been married to Gaurav Thosar since May 10 this year.
According to police and relatives, Mayuri faced persistent harassment from her husband, parents-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Her family alleged that she was subjected to physical and mental abuse and was pressured for money.
“She was tortured continuously by her in-laws and they kept demanding money. She had spoken to us about it several times,” said Mayuri’s father, Bhagwan Budukale, who arrived in Jalgaon with relatives on Wednesday.
The family has demanded immediate arrest of all the accused, including her husband. “Until they are taken into custody, we will not claim her body or allow the post-mortem to be conducted,” they said, leading to a tense situation at the district hospital.
Police said an FIR has been registered under relevant sections for abetment of suicide and dowry harassment, and further investigation is underway.
Mayuri’s death has sparked outrage in her native village in Buldhana district, where relatives and locals have sought swift justice.
