Drishyam, the Malayalam language crime thriller film series starring Mohanlal in the lead role, is a critically acclaimed movie. For the unversed, the first instalment of the crime thriller was released on December 19, 2013. The movie became a box office hit and was the highest-grossing Malayalam film at that time. In a past interview, the filmmaker, Jeethu Joseph revealed that he had no plans to make Drishyam 2, but when the movie was remade in different languages between 2015 and 2016, he gave it some thought. Now, the director has shared a big update about the third instalment, Drishyam 3.
Director, Jeethu Joseph talks about the character arc of Mohanlal in Drishyam 3
In a recent conversation with Baradwaj Rangan, the Drishyam director Jeethu Joseph shared that he is confident people will enjoy the third instalment. He mentioned that Drishyam 3 will be a good film, and he is not at all worried about its box-office success. He shed light on the character arc of Mohanlal. For the uninitiated, Mohanlal portrayed the role of ‘George Kutty’. He was quoted as saying:
“I am happy with Drishyam 1 and 2, and Drishyam 3 is going to be a good film. I don’t know about the box office thing, but I approached the character growth organically, not considering Mohanlal as an actor, but I considered him as George Kutty, and whatever changes can happen after four years, that’s where I am working on.”
Director, Jeethu Joseph reveals that Drishyam 3‘s script has been completed after multiple rewrites
In the same interview, Jeethu revealed that the script of Drishyam 3 has been completed. He shared that during his Europe trip in April 2025, he wrote the screenplay, and on his way to Dubai from Amsterdam, he finished the scene order. He mentioned that while he was shooting for his movie, Valathu Vashathe Kallan, he had to wake up at 3:30 in the morning, even though it was hectic to complete the script of the Mohanlal starrer. In his words:
“It’s fully done. I had a Europe trip in April, so while travelling I wrote the screenplay, and on the Amsterdam to Dubai flight, I finished the scene order. After that, I came here, and I had this shoot of Valathu Vashathe Kallan, so every morning I woke up at 3:30, wrote two or three scenes, and that’s how you complete it. It was a pretty hectic thing.”
Jeethu added that it was his daughters, Catherine Jeethu and Katina Jeethu, who disapproved of the first script. His editor and cameraman then read the script after the initial changes were made. The duo also gave their opinion, and thus, after five drafts, the filmmaker could finalise the script for the film.
Drishyam director, Jeethu Joseph gives a stern warning to the audience
Jeethu gave a stern warning to fans, who are expecting a mind-game as complex as in Drishyam 2, because they may be disappointed. The 2013 film was a massive hit, while Drishyam 2, was released in 2021 on Amazon Prime during the pandemic, and is hailed as one of Indian cinema’s best sequels. For those unaware, the 2021 film was set six years later, where ‘George Kutty’ was shown protecting his family while cleverly outsmarting the investigators. He said:
“If the audiences are expecting a heavy intelligence game like Drishyam 2, then they will be disappointed.”
