On Thursday, Aamir Khan and ace filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani officially announced their next collaboration, which will chronicle the life of Dadasaheb Phalke. Set against the backdrop of the Indian independence struggle, the film will explore the extraordinary journey of Phalke, an artist who laid the foundation of the largest indigenous film industry in the world. Filming is scheduled to begin in October 2025, shortly after the release of Aamir Khan’s upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par.

The yet-untitled project has been in development for the past four years, with a script penned by Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi, Hindukush Bharadwaj, and Avishkar Bharadwaj. VFX studios from Los Angeles have already created AI-driven designs to bring the pre-independence era to life. The makers have also been receiving inputs and rare anecdotes from Phalke’s grandson, Chandrashekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar, lending authenticity and depth to the film.

Meanwhile, Jr NTR is reportedly set to headline Made in India, a separate biopic inspired by the life and legacy of Dadasaheb Phalke. The film, which was announced by SS Rajamouli in 2023, is a pan-India venture to be produced by Varun Gupta of Max Studios and SS Karthikeya of Showing Business. Sources suggest that a detailed narration of the final script — developed over the past year — recently left the RRR star deeply moved and instantly convinced to take on the role.

Unlike his recent action-heavy roles, Made in India will see Jr NTR in a dramatically different avatar, exploring the emotional and visionary side of a man who revolutionized Indian storytelling through cinema. The film promises to showcase never-seen-before facets of Phalke’s life, taking audiences on a journey from the birth of Indian cinema to its formative years.

With both films helmed by powerhouse creators and featuring top-tier actors, audiences can expect two unique cinematic interpretations of Dadasaheb Phalke’s legacy — each promising to honour his immense contribution to Indian cinema in its own distinctive way.
