Fashion has a new first-of-its-kind meet-and-greet.
The Accessories Council is joining forces with Fa$hn Club to launch a monthly in-person “Bagels & Looks” series where fashion stars can meet their biggest fans. The concept allows fans, aspiring stylists and designers to meet and interact with leading industry figures while having brunch.
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter stylist Ty Hunter is headlining the first event, slated for Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. PST at the legendary Canter’s Deli on Fairfax in Los Angeles.
Hunter, who said he loved thrift shopping with his grandmother, was always drawn to fashion, especially “how an outfit could tell a story.” His journey began with a job in retail, where he was a window dresser and a top salesperson. Along the way he began working with Knowles-Carter and Destiny’s Child. From there, the celebrity stylist’s work evolved from behind-the-scenes to collaborating with artists, performers, designers, directors and photographers. “Each experience taught me something new — how to listen to clients, understand their vision and elevate their style,” he told WWD.
For aspiring stylists, Hunter advised: “Stay authentic to your vision.” He explained that fashion is about storytelling, and one’s creativity should shine through every piece that is styled. He also advised that one should build strong relationships because “networking isn’t about who you know but who knows you and your work.”
And his final two tips are to always be a student because trends come and go, as well as to remember that “confidence is your best accessory.”
Those are some of the key points that Hunter could zero-in on at the Oct. 4 event. “I absolutely anticipate that he will be addressing the crowd, but I know he’s going to sit down and talk to people individually, answer questions, interact with the brands and the people who are on the site,” said Karen Giberson, Accessories Council‘s president and chief executive officer.
Giberson said the trade group has been successful hosting smaller networking get-togethers for its membership, such as casual coffees in Connecticut, Texas and Las Vegas, while also working on larger-scale events. She met the two founders of Fa$hn Club — E! Entertainment TV Network creator Larry Namer and fashion creator Weerdo — at one of the smaller events, and began a discussion that led to “Bagels & Looks.” She views the first meet-up with Hunter as the “incubator” event that will provide some learnings on how to expand the idea because “there’s a massive community of fashion people that really want to connect, want to get together.”
No slouch in the fashion styling department, Weerdo has worked with fashion icons that include the Versace siblings and “Material Girl” Madonna. He’s known for viewing fashion as entertainment, with a touch of the Hollywood vibe. “I have always wanted to be in a true fashion club, but there never was one, so I created Fa$hn Club to start my own,” he said.
Looking back to the days when Bowery Bar was a restaurant and at each table was a “fashion star I had read about in WWD,” Weerdo said he would go table-to-table introducing himself and meeting everyone, noting that they all appreciated his curiosity and interest. “The opportunity to meet these fashion figures up close was awe-inspiring,” he said. “I thought it was time to bring back that moment, so every fashionista out there could be a part of something like that.”
Weerdo told WWD that his vision for Bagels & Looks is similar to a book club, but instead of discussing chapters the topics will be about “the looks, the drip, the fits.” As for why now, he said that a new door into fashion was needed, with a focus starting with the fan. Similar to famous athletes and pop stars who make time for their fans, Weerdo said designers, creative directors and stylists should do the same thing with their followers.
With more eyes on Hollywood and the growth of Instagram and TikTok, “we knew we had to bring it back to basics,” Namer said, adding that fashion fans needed a venue where they could interact with insiders and experts “up close, learn and get inspired.”
Namer has grand plans to grow Bagels & Looks beyond just Los Angeles. “I will ensure that we can plan as many events as are needed,” he promised. “It’s not about which city do we go to, it’s where are the fans, how fast can we get there.”
Noting that colleagues in Shanghai are asking when the meet-and-greet can host an event there, Namer said: “We will ask our members, the fashion fans, where they want us to be and what types of events they want to go to.”
Tickets for the Oct. 4 event are $150 each. More information about membership and future events are available at fashnclub.com.
