Former US President Joe Biden has undergone surgery to remove skin cancer lesions, his spokesperson confirmed on Thursday the latest in a series of health challenges he has faced.

Spokesperson Kelly Scully said Biden recently underwent Mohs surgery, a common procedure where thin layers of skin are removed until no cancer cells remain. The confirmation came after Inside Edition published footage of Biden leaving a Delaware church with a scar on his forehead.

Biden has faced cancer before. In March, his office revealed that he had been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer that had spread to his bones, prompting him to share: “Cancer touches us all Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”

Two years earlier, while still in office, Biden had a basal cell carcinoma removed from his chest. His physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, said in 2023 that a routine exam also uncovered a skin lesion, which was removed and confirmed cancerous by biopsy.

Cancer has deeply affected the Biden family. His son, Beau, died from a brain tumor in 2015, and First Lady Jill Biden has also undergone surgery for cancerous lesions.
