Netflix’s latest show, The Royals, featuring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, has been making new headlines ever since its release on May 9, 2025. Especially the grand sets, aesthetic costumes, majestic palaces with impressive Royals and their family dramas immediately became the talk of the town. Set in the fictional city of Morpur, it follows the journey of an Independent CEO who gets entangled with a fading royal family and its future king. While some people were impressed with the refreshing show with its grandiosity, others called it out for its inconsistent storyline, exaggerated drama and more. However, a new aspect has cropped up after Royal Fables criticised The Royals for showing ‘false narratives’ on the show.

Royal Fables slams The Royals for stereotyping Royal families in India

Royal Fables, is a platform founded by Anshu Khanna which focuses on presenting the real royals of India. They recently took to their Instagram handle and shared a long letter for Netflix India and The Royals’s makers to voice their concerns about the display of Royal families on the show. The letter written on behalf of 565 princely states of India criticised the show for presenting the Royals in India in a ‘misleading’ and ‘superficial’ way. Sharing how the show presents many false narratives, they penned:

“First off, royal families are not poor. They are not selling their palaces or making money from bat poop. They are land owners and inheritors of a rich legacy that they are monetising.”

Royal Fables also mentioned how conserving Palaces isn’t an easy task, and the present generation of inheritors, became heritage-promoting entrepreneurs who nurture and raise money through legal means. Citing different scenes from the show, they mentioned how Royals don’t sell their paintings or do nothing at all. Instead, they are educated and turn to politicians, temple patrons etc. The platform also mentioned that Royal women dress subtly and they don’t sit idle in heavy dresses or jewels. Concluding the note, they wrote:

“Our humble request is that next time when you profile The Royals who are true custodians of Indian history, just be sensitive to their mishaps and do some research and homework.”

Netizens react to Royals Fable’s claims against The Royals

When Royals Fables shared the letter on the internet, it received a mixed response from the netizens. Some users appreciated the platform for voicing against the wrong narratives on the show, while others felt it was an unnecessary reaction. One user netizen explained that one show couldn’t represent the Royals in India and penned, “Lol, the show never called Royal families poor. Just one particular family is in debt. Really weird how this is your area of concern right now.” Another user supported the platform and commented, “Well said, our Royals are representatives of our ancient Heritage and culture. And they are helping restore that. If they are born into their legacy, and that’s their destiny, let’s not put them down as they represent Imdia and our ancestor. ”
