The Ministry of Education has released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 list for engineering colleges. Once again, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) dominate the rankings, holding nine out of the top ten spots. These institutions continue to set benchmarks in teaching, research, and innovation, shaping the country’s technical education landscape.
1. IIT MADRAS
Leading the chart is IIT Madras, known for its strong focus on research and industry partnerships. The institute has consistently topped NIRF rankings, reflecting its academic strength and global collaborations.
2. IIT DELHI
IIT Delhi secures the second spot. With a central location in the capital, it has become a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. The institute has strong ties with industries and global universities.
3. IIT BOMBAY
In third place, IIT Bombay is recognised for its academic excellence and a vibrant campus culture. It has a strong alumni network and is home to several leading technology research centres.
4. IIT KANPUR
At fourth, IIT Kanpur is well-regarded for its rigorous academic curriculum and contributions to aerospace, computer science, and material sciences. Its research ecosystem continues to expand globally.
5. IIT KHARAGPUR
IIT Kharagpur, the oldest IIT, ranks fifth. It is known for its expansive campus and interdisciplinary research, particularly in engineering, law, and management.
6. IIT ROORKEE
Placed sixth, IIT Roorkee has strengths in civil and water resources engineering. Its history goes back to 1847, making it one of Asia’s oldest technical institutions.
7. IIT HYDERABAD
At seventh, IIT Hyderabad stands out for its modern teaching methods, start-up ecosystem, and advanced research in AI, robotics, and biomedical engineering.
8. IIT GUWAHATI
Ranked eighth, IIT Guwahati is emerging as a key research hub in the Northeast. Its scenic campus and growing international collaborations add to its appeal.
9. NIT TIRUCHIRAPPALLI
Breaking into the IIT-dominated list at ninth, NIT Trichy is the only NIT in the top 10. It is known for strong placement records and a solid academic environment.
10. IIT BHIITU
In tenth place, IIT BHU combines engineering education with the rich cultural heritage of Varanasi. It is gaining ground in research and industry engagement.
The 2025 NIRF list shows IITs continuing to dominate India’s engineering education, with NIT Trichy maintaining its place among them. These institutions remain central to shaping future engineers, driving research, and strengthening India’s global standing in science and technology.
