Jessica Chastain embraced a glamorous take on the gladiator sandal style for her appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on Tuesday, showcasing an intricate and dazzling set from René Caovilla. The actress is currently promoting the Apple TV+ series “The Savant.”

While Chastain’s glittering Gucci dress made a statement, her shoes played more than a supporting role in her ensemble. She wore a knee-high style which featured not only the quintessential horizontal straps of a gladiator sandal but also an ornate swirling design of various shapes leading down the leg and transitioning into a narrowing diamond design at the foot.

The black shoes became more minimalist in the back, showcasing slender horizontal straps down the lower leg. While gladiator sandals are traditionally flat, this pair elevated and further formalized the look with a stiletto heel. The sandals were also embellished with Swarovski crystals throughout, giving the set a captivating shine that complemented her checked A-line lamé-effect minidress.

The gladiator style, famously associated with ancient Rome, has been gaining momentum lately, and the look can take on many forms, from more traditional versions to statement-making, party-ready ones. Tyla is another celebrity who’s shown love for gladiator sandals lately — she’s showcased how diverse the style can get with a stiletto boot-sandal hybrid worn on stage at All Points East; an Alaïa stiletto with slender close-together straps worn in Berlin, and gold René Caovilla sandals with dainty crisscrossing straps worn at the Kids’ Choice Awards, which she hosted this year.

The dainty and minimalist lace-up offshoot of the gladiator sandal became one of the hottest sandal trends of the summer, with brands like Larroudé and Margaux offering their take on it.

“The Savant,” a thriller series, is slated for release on Sept. 26.
