Karnataka’s Yadgir district saw thousands from the Koli, Kabbaliga and Talwar communities stage a mega protest demanding legal action against those who allegedly insulted Nija Sharana Ambigara Chowdaiah, a 12th-century saint and poet, and their communities.

Protestors gathered in large numbers and staged a road blockade at Subhas Circle, bringing traffic to a halt for hours.

Protestors accused leaders from the Valmiki community of making derogatory remarks against both Ambigara Chowdaiah and members of the Koli, Kabbaliga and Talwar groups.

They demanded that the State government immediately act against those responsible and banish them from the community.

Leaders also raised the issue of caste inclusion, stressing that Koli, Kabbaliga, Kabber, Besta, Ambiga and other sub-castes, often recognised under alternative names in different regions, should be officially brought under the Scheduled Tribes list.

They also submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar.

During a recent protest by Valmikis against the alleged issuance of fake caste certificates, three community leaders had reportedly made derogatory remarks against Ambigara Chowdaiah, who is revered by the Kolis. The agitators in Yadgir demanded that the police arrest the leaders responsible.
