Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has revealed he often discovers new musical talents through social media reels. Speaking about his approach, Rahman emphasised the importance of being attuned to global sounds and the current cultural fluidity in music. He stated, “The world, unlike before when it was culturally protected, is much more open now. We can play Indian notes on Turkish instruments, and people enjoy different sounds.”
The composer also stated that he used to scout talent through streaming platforms and even reels. “I listen to all kinds of music. Sometimes I listen to the radio, on iTunes, Spotify, or on reels, and discover an artist. I DM them, and they reply. It’s nice the world is shrinking.”
Rahman expressed his delight in seeing remakes of his songs, reflecting his role as both a composer and a listener. “I’m the people. I’m first a listener. I always see what excites me, and what will excite people. As long as people don’t ignore me, I’m fine with it,” he shared.
Known for his diverse compositions, Rahman has been a significant figure in the industry for over three decades. He noted a “craving for good music and poetry,” highlighting music’s transformative power on society.
Currently, Rahman is engaged in composing music for the Hindi film, ‘Ufff Yeh Siyappa’, a unique project for him due to its dialogue-free format. The film, directed by G Ashok, presents Rahman with an opportunity to let music drive the narrative. “Most movies have so many dialogues, the music gets submerged. It’s a challenge to do a silent movie where music drives the narrative,” Rahman explained.
‘Ufff Yeh Siyappa’, produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg, is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 5. It will feature a varied music score, including Indian, orchestral, and jazz influences, showcasing Rahman’s versatility.
