What did Jyothika say for which she is facing criticism?
Last year, in 2024, during an event for her film, Shaitaan, Jyothika mentioned that she has shared screen space with almost all leading actors in South India. However, according to her, women in the South Indian film industry are often given less importance, which is also reflected in posters. She praised actor, Mammootty and Shaitaan co-star, Ajay Devgn, for giving women prominence. She was quoted as saying:
“I have acted with almost all the leading actors in South India. But women don’t get much importance there, not even on posters. People like Mammootty and Ajay Devgn give women prominence.”
Netizens slam Jyothika for her comment
Ever since Jyothika’s old video resurfaced on the internet, netizens slammed the actress for her comment. Sharing various movie posters where Jyothika is featured, a user wrote, “Acted in Kollywood, made her salary, married Suriya & living a peaceful life in the South where people cherish this couple. Nothing wrong in appreciating colleagues there, but don’t compare and talk bad about South.” Slamming the actress for her ungrateful attitude, a user penned:
“It’s fine to praise the people you work with, but you shouldn’t do it at the expense of the industry that gave you recognition and success. Show appreciation without putting down the very field that made you who you are.”
Pointing out how Jyothika has been a face on the posters, a user wrote, “This lady has lost her mind. Why so many lies to show somebody else in a better light, even from the Little John days, I mean, from 2001 she had her face on posters, lies through the teeth after milking everything from her.” Another user penned, “Says CHANDRAMUKHI from Chandramukhi! Jo turnin’ heel and showin’ her Bolly roots nowadays! Have fun.. all the best!”

Jyothika was born on October 18, 1978. She made her acting debut with the Hindi film, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna. During her career, she received several accolades, including a National Film Award, five Filmfare Awards South, four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and the Kalaimamani Award.
