Former India spinner R Ashwin has registered for the upcoming ILT20 auction. Earlier this month, the veteran announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he last represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In 2024, Ashwin brought the curtains down on his international career after the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Following his retirement from Indian cricket, Ashwin is now looking to feature in overseas T20 leagues, beginning with the ILT20. The tournament, which has completed three editions so far, saw Dubai Capitals crowned champions in the latest season after defeating the Desert Vipers in the final.

In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Ashwin spoke about his plans for the ILT20 and expressed optimism about finding a franchise in the auction later this year.

“I have sent my name for the ILT20 auction. Hopefully, I will have a buyer,” Ashwin was quoted as saying.

‘Do not want any regrets in life’

Ashwin recently revealed his wish to feature in overseas leagues, stressing that he enjoys taking the paths less travelled. He also stated that playing cricket remains the greatest joy of his life and that he intends to continue enjoying the game.

The veteran off-spinner had earlier announced his retirement from the IPL through social media, bringing down the curtain on a 17-year-long career in the tournament. Breaking his silence on the decision, Ashwin underlined that the move was driven by his aspiration to explore opportunities in foreign leagues.

“I won’t say it’s a well-planned (decision). But, my way of life has been travelling paths less travelled. But, I don’t do anything for not going in a particular direction. I wouldn’t deny that I didn’t have in mind the thought of playing overseas,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“It was there. In my mind, I want to really enjoy cricket in the final stages of my cricket career. I don’t want any regrets in life. I will definitely keep playing cricket. For me, cricket is a source of great joy.”

Ashwin featured in 221 IPL matches, claiming 187 wickets to finish as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament’s history. The 38-year-old both began and concluded his IPL journey with his home franchise, CSK, with whom he also lifted the trophy twice, in 2010 and 2011.
