NEW DELHI: Russian police detained several individuals on Saturday, including journalists, during a weekly protest outside the Kremlin by the wives of soldiers fighting in Ukraine.
The wives, who have been demanding the return of their spouses from Ukraine, staged rare demonstrations in Moscow.
A video released by independent media outlet SOTA showed police taking two individuals wearing yellow vests labeled ‘Press’ and two others.
Questioning the police action, a woman is seen saying in the video, “Why are you detaining me?”
In a similar incident earlier this month, approximately 20 reporters were detained during the same protest, with the police warning media organizations against covering the demonstrations. These arrests took place on the second anniversary of Moscow’s Ukraine offensive.
Women’s organization ‘Put Domoy’ (The Way Home) had called for protests in Russian cities at noon, according to social media.
Every Saturday, the women symbolically lay red flowers at the tomb of the unknown soldier outside the Kremlin.
Nadezhda, one of the protesting women, told SOTA “In our times even laying flowers is expressing a civic position that carries certain risks.”
