Veja is no longer just a sneaker brand. For the first time in the Parisian company’s 20-year history, Veja is launching sandals.
“It is super important for us to always reinvent ourselves, to surprise everybody, and to create the shoes we want to wear,” Veja co-founder Sebastien Kopp told FN, noting the success of Veja’s introduction to the running category five years ago. “We have been thinking about [sandals] for a while. Moreover, we produce everything in Brazil. It is the country of sandals and flip flops, a country of ‘never-ending’ summers. It was super natural for us to create a sandal that is a tribute to Brazil, with a sole made of ecological wild rubber that we source directly in Amazonia.”

According the brand, sandals are going to be a permanent category moving forward, with more offerings and styles to come later this summer. For its debut, Veja has launched the Etna.
The two-strap sandal style is lightweight and designed with a grippy Amazonian rubber sole — the same material that is uses in every one of Veja sneakers, said Kopp. The sandal is also lined with a green E.V.A. insole, which is an ultra-flexible plastic material made from sugarcane. It comes in six colorways, including purple, black and tan, among others.
In addition, the Etna’s upper is made from suede, sourced from farms in Rio Grande do Sul. This leather is tanned in Brazil without hazardous or banned chemicals and the suede is coated with PFC-free water-repellent oils to protect the sandals from light rain.

“We’re using the same supply chain, the same ecological materials,” explained Kopp. “Most sandals today are made with plastic or with bad raw materials. We wanted to challenge that by creating a light and comfortable product without compromising on materials nor ecology.”
The Etna is available now and retails for $130.
