Emma Stone has officially moved past her La La Land era and is now stepping into her cosmic side as she gears up for the release of her upcoming sci-fi dark comedy, Bugonia. The Oscar winner is currently busy with promotions, and the film has already sparked buzz online following the release of its trailer. While fans are stunned by her striking bald look in Yorgos Lanthimos’ directorial, Emma made even bigger headlines when she openly confessed that she believes in extraterrestrial life.
Emma Stone openly declares her belief in aliens
On August 28, 2025, while promoting her upcoming film Bugonia at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, Emma Stone declared that she believes in the existence of aliens. During the press meet, the 36-year-old Oscar winner confessed that she now stands firm on her belief in extraterrestrial life. Stone was quoted as saying:
“Yes, I’m coming out and saying it: I believe in aliens!”
But what made the Cruella star believe in the alien theory? Well, Stone explained that her fascination with the universe was largely shaped by the cosmic philosophy of late astronomer Carl Sagan, who believed that given the vastness of the universe, it’s statistically likely that there is intelligent life elsewhere.
As one of the earliest advocates for the ‘search for extraterrestrial intelligence’ (SETI), Sagan estimated that the Milky Way alone could contain millions of advanced civilisations other than Earth. Gushing about Carl Sagan’s theory, Emma Stone told the press:
“I watched his show, Cosmos, and fell madly in love with his philosophy and his science and how brilliant he seems to be. The idea that we are alone in this vast expanse of the universe—truly not that we’re being watched but that we’re alone out here—is a pretty narcissistic thing to think.”

Emma Stone on playing an alien in Bugonia
Emma Stone set the internet abuzz after debuting her alien-inspired look in the trailer of Bugonia, the sci-fi black comedy that premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 28, 2025. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the film stars the two-time Academy Award winner as a powerful and wealthy CEO who is kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists, who are convinced she is an alien plotting to destroy planet Earth.
Speaking about her character in Bugonia, Stone not only shared her firm belief in the existence of extraterrestrial life, but in her signature cheeky candour, she asked the journalists present in the room:
“How do you know I’m not an alien?”
