Orlando Bloom got candid about the “paranoia” he suffered after quickly losing 52 pounds for his role in the forthcoming boxing film “The Cut.”
The actor, who portrays a retired boxer getting back into the ring, recalled only eating tuna and cucumber in the lead-up to filming the Sean Ellis-directed movie during an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of “This Morning.”
“I was just exhausted,” he added, explaining that he had “no energy or brain power.”
“Just mentally, physically, I was hangry. I was a horrible person to be around.”
Bloom, 48, admitted he suffered from “paranoia” and “intrusive thoughts” after his nutritionist, who has worked with the “Dark Knight” star Christian Bale, “tiered [him] down from three meals a day to two.”
“Suddenly, all these foods were being taken away from me, and my protein powder was the last one,” he added.
“I was like, ‘No! Don’t take that one.’ Then basically I came down to [eating] just tuna and cucumber for the last three weeks.”
Bloom explained his nutritionist would regularly check his blood.
“We’re supposed to eat and sleep and take care of ourselves,” he continued. “It’s really a commentary on the lengths a person will go to have that second shot. I think that’s so relatable.”
The “Lord of the Rings” star claimed that athletes cut weight “on the regular,” but actors “take it to the extreme” during the short period they have to gear up for a role.
Later in the interview, Bloom shared he would be “lying down in between takes on set,” explaining, “Then I’d get up, do my push-ups … look a little bit bulkier.”
The “Kingdom of Heaven” star emphasized that he wouldn’t “recommend” his “intense” diet to “anyone at home.”
In the film, which will be released on Sept. 5, the actor plays the role of “a retired fighter obsessed with getting back in the ring — even if it costs him his life,” per the synopsis.
In September, Bloom spoke with People at the Toronto International Film Festival, sharing that he needed to film the movie at his lightest weight before being allowed to put on weight.
At the time, he claimed his now ex-fiancée, Katy Perry, “was freaked out” by his transformation.
The exes confirmed their split in July after nine years together.
