Reality star Kate Gosselin was answering fan questions on a TikTok Live on Wednesday (August 27) when she was asked for her advice on how to get through a divorce.
Kate, who divorced Jon Gosselin in 2009 after reports of his alleged infidelity, responded to the fan, explaining how she tried her best to keep the separation “peaceful,” especially due to having kids involved.
“I don’t know if you have kids or don’t have kids, but I just, I made decisions based on how I would want to be treated, honestly,” Kate said, per People. “And I didn’t buy into all the drama and the hate, and the ugly. And I had kids involved, so I wanted it to be as peaceful for them as I possibly could.”
Kate and her ex-husband share 21-year-old sextuplets Hannah, Leah, Alexis, Joel, Aaden and Collin, as well as 24-year-old twins Mady and Cara. Viewers watched the family on the TLC reality series Jon & Kate Plus 8 (later Kate Plus 8), which ran from April 4, 2007, to July 24, 2017.
She continued, “I did not hire an attorney that wanted to stir up trouble; I just wanted it to be peaceful, and I wanted the best for my kids. A lot of things happened that I could not control that did not turn out well for my kids, but I did my best. We just got through it to the best of our ability.”
In conclusion, Kate added, “It could’ve been a lot calmer and a lot nicer if everybody was willing to play nice.”
Since the divorce, Kate and Jon have had a contentious relationship, particularly regarding custody of the children. On December 16, 2009, Kate was granted ownership of the family’s Pennsylvania home and primary custody of the children.
Kate’s latest comments come just weeks after her son, Collin, shared a TikTok post in which he suggested that he and his siblings were “forced apart” and “pitted against each other.” Collin has previously accused his mother of physical and emotional abuse, claiming she kept him locked in the basement as a child.
In an August 10 TikTok post, Kate reacted to a screenshot of Collin’s post about being separated from his siblings, writing, “He knows why.. 😢.”
