Award-winning costume designer Janie Bryant is no stranger to Emmy season. After taking home a trophy for her work on Deadwood, in addition to countless nominations for her midcentury looks on Mad Men, Bryant is back in the spotlight — and on the red carpet — thanks to a nomination for Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel, 1923.

“I feel so grateful to Taylor for having me on this epic journey,” Bryant tells The Hollywood Reporter from her home in Los Angeles. “I was so passionate about working with the actors on the second season. I love my whole team.” Bryant says she also credits this moment to Deadwood and its creator for jumpstarting her costume design career. “I owe so much to David Milch,” she says of the 2004 HBO series creator. “He was the first one to hire me for his Western. It’s really come full circle. I’m so thankful to be recognized.”

In celebration of her Emmy nomination, Paramount+ hosted a 1923 exhibit showcasing Bryant’s work during a pop-up event on Aug. 17 at the Paramount Studios lot. Bryant says it was a pinch-me moment that brought back memories. “A.C. Lyles was definitely guiding me,” she says, referencing the late Deadwood producer. “He passed a few years ago, and he used to always call me Miss Edith Head. I remember the first day that I went to Paramount Studios when I first moved to Los Angeles. I saw this amazing man drive through in this vintage convertible Mercedes. He was in this bespoke suit and was gorgeous. I later found out he was A.C. Lyles.”

In addition to the Yellowstone prequels 1923 and 1883, Bryant recently wrapped production on the second season of Landman with Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter and Michelle Randolph. “What an amazing cast,” she says. “I love those actors so much. It was incredible to jump from a period show to a contemporary show. I loved it.”

Bryant was thrilled to join the project after being a fan of the first season. “After 1923 had wrapped, I had interviewed for a few [other] shows and didn’t get them,” she shares. “I remember sitting at home. I was meditating, and I was like, ‘The right job will find me.’ And the line producer called me and said, ‘Hey, do you want to design Landman? It is amazing to be included in the Taylor Sheridan family. I’m so thankful. I was like, ‘That’s the right decision.’ Landman was just waiting for me.”

Bryant is also currently fast at work designing The Madison in addition to another forthcoming Yellowstone spinoff (working title The Dutton Ranch) with Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser and Annette Bening. “I leave for Bozeman, Montana, next week,” Bryant teases. “And then I’ll be back down in Texas.”

But first, she’ll squeeze in a red carpet moment at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sept. 8. “I’m wearing a custom-made gown from Retrofête to the Emmys,” she says, referencing the New York-based label that she also wore to the Paramount Studios event. “I’m so excited about my dress.”

Ahead of her big day and upcoming shoots, we caught up with Bryant to discuss her favorite fall fashion, western-inspired pieces (including from brands she discovered from Reilly), red carpet hacks and the book behind her new passion project, The Paris Secret. Keep reading to shop her picks.

The Paris Secret is an amazing book,” says Bryant, who optioned the book’s rights and is in the process of adapting it into a series. “It’s such a gorgeous love story, and I feel like we need a lot more love in our lives. It’s so beautifully told. I am working on selling the rights to this story [for television]. So, that’s a work in progress, but it’s such a beautiful book. It’s made to be turned into a TV show. That’s what I’m working on.”

For red carpet moments, Bryant says she keeps Topstick close by. “Oh, believe me — I’ll definitely have my Topstick ready,” she laughs. “I need some Topstick for this dress [I’m wearing to the Emmys].”

“I discovered Doen through working with Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth [Dutton] on Yellowstone,” Bryant explains. “I’m designing the [Rip and Beth] spin-off series. The romance of the collection is beautiful. I’m so drawn to their romantic nature and their designs.”

“I use Retrofête a lot on Landman,” she shares, adding she also personally wore a similar design to her recent Paramount event. “The fit is so perfect. I love this brand.”

Skims is my favorite [shapewear],” she says of the Kim Kardashian-founded brand. “I use it for work. I use it for myself. For a contemporary show, Skims is great. If I’m designing a period show, I’ll use what the period specifically [calls for], but for a contemporary show Skims is awesome.”

“I love her jewelry,” Bryant says. “It has such a spiritual [feel], and I’m very spiritual. One of my leading ladies wore a lot of her jewelry in Landman. Our product placement person turned me on to this collection.”

“She does beautiful pendants with these sayings on the back,” Bryant says, clad in a few different Jane Win designs herself. “This is the Lion with the North Star above and on the back it says ‘Courage.’ One is a snake. One is a heart. All her pendants are so pretty. I love the gold chain. It has a great weight to it.”

“I use that before I put on the bison tallow,” she explains. “It’s very important to bless this, too. When I open the bottle, I say, ‘Thank you so much for nourishing my body. I’m so grateful to you. I love you. I honor you.’ It’s very important to bless all of your natural products.”

“It heals everything. It has all the minerals and everything that your body needs. I take it every day. Be sure to bless that, too.”

“As a designer, I don’t steam clothes, but my set crew [does]. They do an amazing job,” says Bryant, who recommends this particular steamer from Conair. “I don’t steam anything at home,” she admits. “I’m basically like the [shoeless] cobbler. I throw my stuff on, but I do feel like everyone needs a good steamer. Steamers are amazing to get any wrinkle out.”

Bryant says she loves Scandi-cool label Ganni. “The jeans are incredible. I have a pair that have a gold chain [at] the pocket. I love anything gold. My eyes are like, ‘Gold?’ I’ll buy it. I love the fit of these jeans. I always go down in size in the Ganni because they stretch out. They’re a great boot cut with a beautiful fit. I love the design and that they’re high-waisted. I’m all about accentuating the waist.”

While practical, this particular design holds special meaning for Bryant. “I’m poodle obsessed,” she explains. “It started when I was a little girl. My grandmother used to make all of our stockings for Christmas, and my stocking had a big tree on the top and at the bottom was a train car. In the little cars of the train, they had different presents. One of them had a black poodle. I’ve been obsessed with poodles ever since I was little. I didn’t have my first poodle until I was 23 or 24.”

“I love the Free People collection,” she says. “All of their pieces are so romantic. I love the print on that maxi dress. It’s like a fairy tale. The kimono you can wear over a little T-shirt and jeans or even shorts. You can wear it as night wear. The kimono is so versatile.”

Old Gringo boots are my favorite. I wear them every single day when I’m shooting. The ones that I have are dark cognac and they’re embroidered. They have the perfect heel and height. The other thing that I love about Old Gringo is that they’re very fitted on the leg. For me, with a lot of the cowboy boots, they’re too big in the calves. These have a side zip, and they fit perfectly. I wear those every single day with shorts [or] jeans.”

“I love David Webb. I’ve used them in the past for other contemporary shows [I’ve designed]. I really wanted to use David Webb for Demi Moore’s character. She wears a lot of David Webb and Cartier, of course.” Bryant also personally wears the fine jewelry label. “I love their jewelry. They’re eccentric. I love all the different elements they use. It’s such a bold statement [piece],” she adds.

“All I use is bison tallow,” Bryant says. “I use that on my face, on my body. It’s amazing. It’s the best beauty product. Also, I always bless the tallow before I use it.”

“It’s a great brand that basically cures everything,” she says. “I love that [it’s great for] if you have a little bit of eczema. You can use it if you have a rash or different skin ailments.”

“Kimes’s beautiful denim collection is very cowboy. They have them for men and women, but their women’s jeans fit great. I love that brand. They’re also cut a little bit bigger in the thighs. So, if you have cowboys with big thighs, they love Kimes.”

“Sergio Hudson does amazing jeans. His whole collection is beautiful.”

Western is so in fashion now. I used Cody James so much in Landman for the character Cooper (Jacob Lofland). Those were basically all the shirts that I used for him. They’re very Western. They have great designs.”
