Sonali Bendre, known for her glamour and elegance, recently revealed in an interview that she was once considered too skinny for 1990s Bollywood, which had different beauty standards at the time.
Sonali Bendre reveals why she didn’t fit the ’90s IT girl image
Speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Sonali Bendre expressed gratitude for the continued love she receives for her work in the ’90s. When asked if it’s fair to call her the ’90s IT girl, she responded, “Well, in the ’90s I was not really considered the IT girl, but many others were. I was a very distinct person even then. I remember when I came in, there were girls with beautiful, bouncy curls; I was a skinny, straight-haired, lanky girl. Hindi films didn’t like that.”
She further revealed that despite attempts to change her hairstyle, her hair would always revert to its natural texture. She added, “They wanted a slightly more curvaceous girl. My hair is actually so straight that it was very difficult to curl, and with the amount of hair I had, it was just easier to leave it open and straight.”
Sonali Bendre made her Bollywood debut in 1994 with Aag, opposite Govinda, at just 19. Her breakthrough came in 1996 with English Babu Desi Mem alongside Shah Rukh Khan, followed by the hit Diljale with Ajay Devgn. She went on to star in successful films like Hum Saath Saath Hain, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, and Sarfarosh. In recent years, she has appeared as a judge on reality shows such as India’s Got Talent and India’s Best Dramebaaz.
Sonali also found success in Telugu cinema with hits like Indra opposite Chiranjeevi, Khadgam, and Manmadhudu. She made her OTT debut in 2022 with The Broken News, earning acclaim, and was last seen in a special appearance in Remo D’Souza’s Be Happy.
