Rihanna went back to the archives for her off-duty Los Angeles look on Monday, styling a snakeskin tote bag from Gucci‘s spring 1996 collection, designed under the direction of former creative director Tom Ford.
With her look, the mononymous singer and Savage x Fenty founder curated her attire with a graphic long-sleeve shirt and flowing striped pants evocative of the “dayjama” trend. She also piled on the accessories, wearing layers of gold bracelets and necklaces.

Rihanna’s snakeskin Gucci bag with a bamboo handle, however, was a standout element of her off-duty, elevated casual attire. The bag’s design came during Tom Ford’s time as creative director of the Italian luxury fashion house. Ford departed Gucci in 2005 and launched his eponymous label in 2006.
Ford’s 1996 spring women’s collection for Gucci featured several animal print motifs, particularly zebra print dresses. Lace was used in the collection as well, with an approachable iteration on glamour that echoed the sensibility of the mid-1990s.

That same ’90s style aesthetic saw a resurgence over the course of the last few years, with the rise in Y2K trends embraced dominantly by Gen Z. Repurposed iterations on low-rise jeans, ballet flats and more have been seen from street style to the red carpet and more.
A noted trendsetter and friend of such fashion and beauty houses as Chanel, among others, Rihanna’s incorporation of the Gucci spring 1996 snakeskin bag serves as a reminder of the entrepreneur’s growing vintage and archival collection.

For the last few years, Rihanna has sourced vintage and archival pieces from Chanel, Gucci and other fashion houses, styling pieces seen on the runway from the ’90s and more. Back in December 2024, the “Disturbia” singer was seen wearing a vintage John Galliano look in a mink coat and other oversize pieces from the designer’s fall 1998 collection.
