The end of summer can only mean one thing: it’s time for the Venice Film Festival. This year’s jam-packed line-up will see the likes of Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Emma Stone and Ayo Edebiri heading to the Lido—no doubt bringing a whole host of show-stopping looks with them.
If recent years are anything to go by, you can expect to see plenty of vintage on the red carpet over the next fortnight or so, too. At last year’s festival, Taylor Russell gave us our archival fashion fix via a grey skirt suit from John Galliano’s spring 1995 Pin Up collection and a sheer white gown from Chanel’s spring 1993 couture show, originally worn by Claudia Schiffer on the runway.
The previous year, Amal Clooney turned heads at the DVF Awards in Venice in a blush-pink dress from John Galliano’s fall 2000 collection for Christian Dior, sourced from Tab Vintage. Meanwhile, 2022 was a true vintage year, with the likes of Penélope Cruz, Tessa Thompson and Isabelle Huppert all opting to wear pieces from the fashion archives.
Of course, vintage on the red carpet isn’t a completely new thing. Back in 2018, Lady Gaga wore a white Azzedine Alaïa dress for the Venice premiere of A Star is Born, while Irina Shayk sported a dazzling Versace number from spring 1996 at the same event.
Ahead of this year’s Venice Film Festival, take a look back at the best vintage looks to have graced the Lido to date.
