A24 is planning a weeklong celebration ahead of its reopening of the Off-Broadway Cherry Lane Theater this September, featuring Spike Lee, Jerrod Carmichael, Brandi Carlile, Sofia Coppola and more.

The film studio purchased the 100-year-old theater in 2023 after the West Village theater had run into financial trouble. A24 has since renovated the theater and partnered with the team behind Frenchette to open a restaurant and bar there.

The theater will feature theatrical productions, film screenings and more. Natalie Palamides’ one-woman show Weer will be the first long-run programming at the theater, with the show set for a five-week run starting Sept. 20.

The theater is also planning a film screening series hosted by Sofia Coppola, which will also include a discussion afterwards. This kicks off Sept. 14 with a screening of Foxes and a discussion with Jodie Foster. A block party will follow the Sept. 14. Screening.

    Full list of opening events:

    • Monday, September 8th – a film screening of 25th Hour and Q&A with Spike Lee
    • Tuesday, September 9th – staged reading of True West featuring Michael Shannon, Paul Sparks, Marylouise Burke, and directed by Lila Neugebauer
    • Wednesday, September 10th – a night of comedy with Jerrod Carmichael
    • Thursday, September 11th – Malcolm Gladwell and Brandi Carlile in conversation
    • Sunday, September 14th – Sundays with Sofia film screening of Foxes and Q&A with Sofia Coppola and Jodie Foster

Leading up to reopening, the theater has hosted a series of private events including stand-up comedy by Ramy Youssef and Alex Edelman, HAIM previewing their new album I Quit with a listening party and performance for a group of their fans and a theater reading of To Be Young, Gifted and Black, a Robert Nemiroff play adapted from Lorraine Hansberry’s writings that had its original premiere at the Cherry Lane in 1969.
