Boman, it’s been thirteen years since you and Farah became the Parsi community’s Dharmendra and Hema Malini?
I can’t believe it’s been thirteen years. The film was as much fun to make as it was to watch. We had some lovely old Parsi friends join in, and they gave it so much flavour. Many of them had never acted before, but I think they did superbly well. And of course, there was our director Bela Sehgal, who gave Farah and me the space to just let go and enjoy ourselves.

Farah Khan made her belated acting debut in this one?
Yes. Initially, Farah was one of the probables. When I told my wife Zenobia about the film, she immediately said there was no question about it—Farah had to do it. Zenobia has always been a big fan of Farah. She told me, “You should please push for Farah to do this role, she’ll be fantastic.” So Zenobia and I went to Bela and said, “What do you think?” Bela hesitated, saying she thought I wanted a more experienced actor. But I insisted Farah would be perfect.
And she turned out to be the right fit?
Absolutely. Farah’s got the madness, the sense of humour. Even though she was at the top of her game as a choreographer, she knew this was her first film as an actress. She was such a willing learner—she would happily do take after take until she got the right tone and pitch. I truly enjoyed working with her. She’s a complete sport, she can laugh at herself, she’s hilarious, and she has such a good understanding of cinema. Her knowledge of classic musicals and all our favourite films really matched mine.
Did you both become close friends while shooting Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi?
We were already friends before that, since Main Hoon Na. But yes, during this film we grew even closer, and to this day we remain very, very good friends. Zenobia is an even bigger fan now. We’re extremely close and very grateful that we got the opportunity at the right time to do Shirin Farhad—a real romp, a warm and light-hearted Parsi rom-com. I have such vivid, happy memories of those days. Thank you for asking, Subhash, that’s very sweet of you.
