For nearly 40 years, American Girl has been sparking imaginations with characters who bring history — and girlhood — to life. Following Hollywood-inspired collabs with Clueless, Netflix’s Wednesday and Disney, the toy company is debuting plush versions of its classic historical dolls.
Available online today, the My First American Girl Heritage Doll collection reimagines five beloved characters as soft, 13.5-inch knitted plush dolls. Designed for ages 18 months and older, each doll ($60) is reimagined with a cozy version of her signature outfit and includes a colorful toddler-friendly board book.
The range features Josefina Montoya, who grows up in pre-statehood New Mexico; Kirsten Larsen, who immigrates from Sweden to Minnesota in the 1850s; Civil War-era Addy Walker, who escapes from a plantation and grows up in Philadelphia; Samantha Parkington, an Edwardian-era orphan in New York; and World War II-era Molly McIntire. The dolls feature soft touches such as embroidered faces, styled yarn hair, pleated dresses, faux leather shoes, charming bloomers and more.
The new collection comes more than 20 years after Julia Roberts’ Red Om Films gave American Girl the made-for-TV treatment. AnnaSophia Robb portrayed the Edwardian-era Samantha and Shailene Woodley played American Revolution-era Felicity Merriman (who has been retired) in TV films, while Abigail Breslin starred as Kit Kittredge in the Great Depression-set theatrical release, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, that also featured Stanley Tucci, Joan Cusack, Chris O’Donnell and Julia Ormond.
American Girl recently released a limited-edition Wednesday Addams doll that quickly sold out and outfits inspired by Cher and Dionne from Clueless. The brand also has a Disney Princess line of 18-inch dolls modeled after Frozen‘s Elsa and Ana, Moana, Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, Tiana and Rapunzel.
