Superstar Aamir Khan, Hong Kong filmmaker Peter Ho-Sun Chan, Hong Kong director Stanley Tong and producer Prasad Shetty graced a panel discussion named ‘Indian Cinema, Oriental Look’ on day 2 of WAVES 2025. Aamir Khan has a fan base in China, thanks to the super-success of his films like Dangal (2016) and Secret Superstar (2017). He proposed that an Indo-China film, if planned well, has the potential to be a huge blockbuster in both countries.

Aamir Khan said, “I have had the opportunity to visit China a number of times in the last 10 years. I feel that the audience in China, their cultural favour and emotions are very similar to the emotions of Indians. So, the Chinese audience reacts in a very similar way to the content that Indians do. This is what my experience was when I was watching my films in the theatres in China. The way they reacted to Dangal, for instance, there was no difference.”
He added, “Hence, I feel that there is a lot of scope and potential for a number of reasons. India has a very vibrant, creative community and so does China. China has amazing creative people. I have been to China a number of times. I have seen their live events and movies. The standard of their work is truly world-class. That itself is a great opportunity for India and China to work together. Whether creatively, emotionally or from a business perspective, I think it is only a win-win situation if we collaborate with China.”
He continued, “I have been in discussions with my friend from China. We have often explored the possibility. WAVES will give a further push towards the goal. Suppose there’s an Indo-Chinese film. If it has a star from China and a star from India, (the film will appeal to) roughly half the population on Earth (smiles). Hence, you have a huge audience already over there. I really look forward to a collaboration with a talent from China.”
Aamir Khan, however, also cautioned, “It’s always the story and script that excites a creative person. It can come from a Chinese or Indian writer. On a very surface level, you can say, ‘Let’s make a big action film with stars’. One can go that route and it might even work but that doesn’t excite me. You can’t force anything. It has to come organically.”
Peter Ho-Sun Chan of Perhaps Love (2005), The Warlords (2007) and Soul Mate (2016) fame revealed, “My only association with Indian Cinema was Shashi Kapoor when I was a boy in the 70s. I grew up in Thailand. Half of my classmates were Indians. I’d be eating aloo paratha from their lunch boxes! Whenever I come to India, I keep asking for it.”
He further stated, “My assistant asked me to watch 3 Idiots (2009). For the first 50 minutes, I couldn’t get involved with the film as it was very different from my style of filmmaking! It took me 3 to 4 attempts to watch the whole film. Then, I watched it 5 times with my daughter, my wife and my three different groups of friends, that too in cinemas! That sucked me into the world of Indian cinema.”
