The Kutch district of Gujarat on Thursday experienced two minor earthquakes in the span of seven minutes, causing a brief moment of alarm among residents, though no casualties or damage to property have been reported.
According to the data provided by the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR), the first tremor of magnitude 3.4 was recorded at 10.12 pm. Its epicentre was located 20 km northeast of Bhachau, a town that was severely impacted by the devastating 2001 earthquake.
Just seven minutes later, at 10:19 pm, another earthquake of a smaller magnitude, 2.7, was felt. This second quake’s epicentre was 19 km northwest of Rapar.
Officials from the district disaster management authority confirmed that they have not received any reports of casualties, injuries, or significant damage to structures from either of the two seismic events.
Kutch is located in a very high risk seismic zone, and low-intensity tremors are a regular occurrence in the region. The district is still highly conscious of seismic activity due to the tragic 2001 earthquake, which claimed thousands of lives and caused widespread destruction.
