Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori successfully defended their championship at the 2025 US Open, defeating Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the mixed doubles final on August 21.
Errani and Vavassori took the opening set 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, capitalising on early momentum and unforced errors from Swiatek, including a crucial forehand miss. The Italian duo then broke early in the second set, but Swiatek and Ruud mounted a comeback to take it 7-5, forcing a match tiebreak. The match came down to a deciding 10-point tiebreak between the defending champions and third seeds Swiatek and Ruud.
In the end, the experience and consistency of Errani and Vavassori proved decisive as they edged out their opponents 10-6 in the tie-breaker to retain their crown.
Earlier in the day, Swiatek and Ruud staged a dramatic semifinal win over top seeds Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper, coming through 3-5, 5-3, [10-8]. Errani and Vavassori, meanwhile, cruised past Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison 4-2, 4-2 in just 44 minutes.
This year’s format featured eight pairings based on combined singles rankings and eight wild cards-a move that left some doubles competitors fuming, including Vavassori and Errani, but brought a sellout crowd to Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Doubles specialists argued that the format devalued both the Grand Slam title and the discipline of doubles itself, while the U.S. Tennis Association countered that the previous structure had already done so. Of the 16 teams in this year’s US Open mixed doubles championship, only Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori were true doubles specialists.
Regardless, the tournament became a hit in terms of viewership and crowd engagement. Beloved by diehard fans but often lost in a schedule dominated by singles action, this year’s mixed doubles event began five days before the main draw, with a sellout crowd expected at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The format was overhauled to feature just 16 teams, half as many as competed a year ago-with eight entries based on players’ combined singles rankings and eight wildcards. Organizers were inspired to pursue the new format after watching retired greats Serena Williams and Andy Murray play mixed doubles together at Wimbledon in 2019, a dream pairing that captured the attention of both fans and the media.
The fan response was overwhelmingly positive. As of Monday, prices for a pair of courtside seats for Wednesday’s semifinals and final were listed at over $500 on secondary ticket platform StubHub.
With the win, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori took home the top prize of $1 million.
