NEW DELHI: Former US president Donald Trump lashed out at a New York judge who ordered him to pay $354.9 million in penalties for allegedly inflating his net worth to deceive lenders.
Speaking at a campaign rally for the presidential polls, Trump claimed that the judge’s decision was an “election interference ploy”.
He accused the judge of being part of a left-wing conspiracy to prevent him from becoming president again.
Trump also repeated his unfounded claim that the 2020 election was fraudulent and that he actually won.
In addition to the financial penalties, the judge also banned Trump from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation for three years.
The judge described Trump and his co-defendants as lacking remorse and bordering on pathological.
The New York attorney general, Letitia James, had accused Trump and his family businesses of overestimating his net worth by billions of dollars to secure better loan terms.
Trump is currently leading the race for the Republican presidential nomination and is likely to face Joe Biden for the top post.
Michigan, a crucial battleground state, could play a decisive role in the outcome.
Trump also urged his supporters in Michigan to participate in the upcoming nominating contests to help build momentum for his campaign.
Earlier, Trump had responded to the ruling in a post on his Truth Social platform and said, “The ‘decision’ is a Complete and Total SHAM.”
One of his lawyers, Alina Habba also slammed the ruling, “This verdict is a manifest injustice – plain and simple. It is the culmination of a multi-year, politically fueled witch hunt that was designed to “take down Donald Trump,” before Letitia James ever stepped foot into the Attorney General’s office,” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The ruling stems from a civil case initiated by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accusing Trump and his family businesses of inflating his net worth by as much as $3.6 billion annually over a decade to deceive lenders for better loan terms.
