FRESHWATER VS. SOUTH SEA PEARLS
Freshwater pearls are cultivated in China, Indonesia, and Japan. They are admired for their pastel hues, pink, peach, lavender, and classic white, and their irregular shapes, from baroque to near-round. Accessible pricing and variety make them appealing to younger buyers.
South Sea pearls, grown in the pristine waters of Australia, the Philippines, and Tahiti, are known for their large size, roundness, and deep lustre. Their limited shades white, silver, and gold, add to their exclusivity and association with luxury.
HOW CULTIVATION WORKS
Pearls are created through a delicate balance of natural growth and human guidance. Freshwater pearls develop inside mussels, with each capable of producing multiple pearls. Their quality improves with longer maturation periods.
South Sea pearls require even greater patience. Grown in Pinctada maxima oysters, usually just one pearl develops over a 30-month cycle. THE ART OF CURATION
After harvest, pearls are carefully graded by gemologists for size, shape, colour, and lustre. Only AAA and AA grade pearls, reflecting superior quality, are selected. This meticulous process ensures that each pearl piece carries enduring value and artistry.
CLEARING COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
Many assume cultured pearls are artificial. In truth, nearly all pearls today are cultured but still form naturally inside molluscs, with only minimal human intervention. Another misconception is that pearls must be perfectly round to be valuable. In reality, baroque or irregular pearls can be equally precious if they have flawless surfaces and strong lustre.
Younger buyers increasingly prefer minimalistic jewellery with irregular pearls, reflecting individuality and modern taste. At the same time, South Sea pearls remain favoured for bridal wear and luxury occasions.With a growing focus on sustainability, the pearl industry is embracing ethical sourcing and direct farming. Pearls, shaped by nature and perfected by human care, will continue to be timeless heirlooms for generations to come.
