The 3-hour talks in Alaska between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin did not result in a breakthrough for ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Putin reportedly demanded a complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Eastern Donbass region, offering to freeze the frontline and exchange. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy rejected this demand. Trump stated his agreement with Putin that the best way to end the war is to proceed directly to a peace deal without a prior ceasefire. Following the talks, First Lady Melania Trump wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin, which Trump personally hand-delivered. In the note, Melania urged Putin to end the war. A Russian speaker stated, “The visit was timely and very useful. We talked about almost all areas of our interaction, but first of all, of course, we talked about a possible resolution of the Ukrainian crisis on a fair basis.” Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Trump in Washington DC on Monday, with European leaders also invited.
