One such royal is Maharani Shivranjani Rajye, princess of the royal family of Jodhpur state. The Cambridge-educated Princess chose not to get married and is looking after her family’s legacy.
Shivranjani Rajye is the daughter of former Maharaja Gaj Singh II and his wife, Hemlata Rajye. She also has a younger brother, Shivraj Singh of Jodhpur. Besides managing the activities of Umaid Bhawan Palace, Shivranjani also owns the Jodhpur Girls Polo team. Unlike the other royal princesses, Shivranjani chose not to get married and opted to stay single even at the age of 50.
Shivranjani Rajye lives in the Umaid Bhawan Palace which has 347 rooms
Shivaranjani was raised in the West Indies but returned to India at the age of six. She studied anthropology at Cambridge University and also took a filmmaking course in New York. The Princess, along with her royal family, lives in the magnificent palace, Umaid Bhawan, which has 347 rooms, spread across an area of 26 acres.
When Jodhpur suffered drought for three years, the common people suffered majorly. To give them work and relief, Maharaja Umaid Singh, the then ruler of Jodhpur, commissioned the work of Umaid Bhawan Palace. The palace boasts many royal halls, a swimming pool, a library, a billiards room, a grand dining area, gardens, and even a golf course.
The royal family partnered with the Taj group, a luxury chain of hotels and partly converted their royal residence, into a hotel. The palace is now divided into three sections, The royal residence where Gaj Singh’s family lives, The Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum and the Umaid Bhawan Palace Hotel.
Shivranjani Rajye manages her family’s fortune worth Rs. 22,000 crores
Princess Shivranjani Rajye and her brother, Yuvraj Shivraj Singh are the heirs to the royal family. In 2005, Shivraj met with a tragic accident while playing polo, and he slipped into a coma for two months. Shivranjani took the responsibility of the family business on her own shoulders. Since then, she has played a key role in managing the family business, turning old palaces and forts into museums and hotels.
According to Startup Talky, the net worth of Maharaja Gaj Singh’s royal family is around Rs. 22,400 crores. Shivranjani Rajye and her brother, Yuvraj Shivraj Singh, are actively growing their legacy, and the business from Umaid Bhawan Palace is the family’s major source of income.
Shivranjani runs the Heritage Resorts, and she also looks into the museum trust. She also pays attention to the art and culture at the museum, and her duty also involves serving the cultural heritage. Talking about the family business, she elaborated and said:
“We have heritage tourism and real estate — those are the family businesses. The rest of what we do is charitable.”
Shivranjani Rajye is still single at the age of 50
Shivranjani Rajye is still single at the age of 50 and has no intentions of getting married. She is fully focused on expanding her family business and taking forward Jodhpur’s legacy forward. Beyond her business, Shivranjani Rajye has been promoting women’s polo in India and owns the Jodhpur Girls’ Polo team.
