Rajinikanth’s starrer, Coolie has hit the theatres on August 14, 2025. The film is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, who is well known for movies like Leo, Kaithi, Vikram and many more. The action thriller featuring pan-Indian star, Rajinikanth is already making a lot of noise. Not only has the movie’s storyline garnered significant attention, but the film’s ensemble cast has also received considerable praise. However, ever since the film was released, fans have been eagerly waiting to get a grip of the ending of Coolie. There are a lot of speculations related to Coolie being a part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). Here’s what we know.
Meet the starcast of Coolie
Before delving into the ending of Coolie, let’s meet the starcast of the film. Tamil superstar, Rajinikanth appeared in the role of ‘Deva’, Nagarjuna Akkineni portrayed the role of ‘Simon’, Soubin Shahir appeared as ‘Dayalan’ a.k.a ‘Dayal’, Shruti Haasan played the role of ‘Preethi’, ‘Deva’s’ daughter, Sathyaraj portrayed ‘Rajasekar’, and Aamir Khan appeared as ‘Dahaa’.
Plotline of Rajinikanth starrer, Coolie
The Rajinikanth starrer, Coolie began at a busy harbour in Visakhapatnam, where ‘Simon’ ran a gold smuggling business with the help of his aide, ‘Dayal’. Far away in Chennai, ‘Deva’ spent a quiet life in his old mansion, and ran a hostel where drinking and smoking were not allowed. Things took a drastic turn, when ‘Deva’ got to know of his friend, ‘Rajasekar’s’ death. He went to Visakhapatnam to attend his friend’s funeral. However, ‘Rajasekar’s’ daughter, ‘Preethi’, doesn’t let ‘Deva’ pay tribute to her father.
Initially, the cause of death was a heart attack, but after the post-mortem, ‘Deva’ discovered that his friend had been murdered. Meanwhile, he learnt about ‘Rajasekar’s’ invention, a machine that burnt animal remains instantly. Authorities rejected it, but ‘Simon’ kidnapped ‘Rajasekar’ and ‘Preethi’ to use them for his own purpose. A twist came to the plot when ‘Simon’ discovered ‘Dayal’ is actually a police constable. So, he attacked him and ordered ‘Deva’ to dispose of the body. He found ‘Dayalan’ alive and spared him, not knowing that ‘Dayalan’ himself had planned ‘Rajasekar’s’ murder. ‘Dayalan’ seized control and kidnapped ‘Preethi’, so that ‘Deva’ worked under him.
Apart from the gold smuggling business, ‘Simon’, ran a gruesome trade, where he murdered the labourers and sold their hearts abroad. Later, when ‘Simon’ travelled abroad, ‘Dayalan’ killed ‘Simon’s’ son and framed ‘Deva’. ‘Preethi’, who was in captivity, managed to call ‘Deva’, using a coolie number taught by her father, which made ‘Deva’ realise that ‘Preethi’ was his own biological child. Getting to know her true identity, he became enraged and killed ‘Simon’ and destroyed his empire. He didn’t reveal the truth to ‘Preethi’, fearing his past might ruin her life. She left thinking that ‘Deva’ was only her protector, while he watched in silence, hiding the pain of a father’s love.
Was there any connection between ‘Deva’ and ‘Simon’?
The story of Coolie shifted back to a flashback, showing ‘Deva’ in a fight with ‘Simon’. He revealed that many years back, he was a labour union leader, when ‘Simon’s’ father, ‘Xavier’, tried to frame and falsely accuse 100 coolies and have them executed. In order to save the workers, ‘Deva’ had to kill ‘Xavier’ in front of young ‘Simon’. This incident made it clear why ‘Simon’ harboured such intense hatred towards ‘Deva’.
Coolie ends with ‘Dahaa’s’ entry
Aamir Khan made the entry as ‘Dahaa’ in the last scene. He was the boss of ‘Simon’ and the head of ‘Simon’s’ empire. When he learnt about ‘Deva’, he wanted to join hands with him. However, ‘Deva’ turned down his offer, while ‘Dahaa’ threatened him to take revenge for ‘Simons’ demise.
Is Coolie part of LCU? Here’s the truth
There was a lot of buzz surrounding Coolie being part of LCU just like Kaithi, Vikram and Leo. For the uninitiated, in Leo, the LCU link came through a post-credits scene, where Kamal Haasan’s voice from Vikram was heard. However, Coolie has no such connection, and there has been no post-credits scene as well. In fact, Aamir’s character, ‘Daaha’, is also not related to Suriya’s ‘Rolex’ from Vikram.
