Filmmaker Karan Johar recently shared his candid thoughts on the sudden success of Saiyaara, the Yash Raj Films release directed by Mohit Suri, in an interview with The Streaming Show. The film, which stars debutant Ahaan Panday, Chunky Panday’s nephew and Ananya Panday’s cousin, alongside newbie Aneet Padda, has defied industry expectations and emerged as a box office sensation.

Speaking about the film’s remarkable performance, Johar said, “I think that everyone believes that they have the answer. Like, so let me tell you the popular belief was like, okay, the streaming platforms are a huge threat to cinema footfalls, you know, like this has happened and now there’s a certain kind of audience that is not going to come and consume content theatrically because they’re consuming so much digitally. Now, this was the theory till three months ago, okay? And we all believe that there is a certain audience that gave films like Pink, Kapoor and Sons, Neerja, Piku, X amount of… There was a 70 to 80 crore club, okay? Let’s call it that was the club for like content-based cinema is what it’s called, content-based cinema.”
Johar further elaborated on the shifting dynamics of audience behavior and shared, “Apparently, other films have no content. Only these films had content. Content-driven cinema has that Rs. 70 to 80 crore club and now that’s shrunk to Rs. 30 to 40 crores because that large Rs. 40 crores loss is now a streaming audience, okay? All this is like what we’re hearing.”
He also touched upon the influence of regional cinema and changing audience tastes and added, “Then we’re hearing things like the South films are so much more stronger than us, which is true. Technically, they’re way ahead of the game and they’re like, oh, there is an exhaustion in a certain kind of cinema. Love stories are not working anymore.”
However, Saiyaara challenged all these assumptions, Johar revealed, “So, all this was told to us and all this was understood as per academia, as per like everybody who is now. Then comes Saiyaara, okay? And everything changes. Suddenly, a film with two newcomers with a love story as its genre like does Rs.22 crores on day one. Suddenly, every logic, academia, information you have to trade goes out of the window, like literally.”
The film’s success underscores the unpredictability of today’s box office and the growing influence of content, star power, and audience engagement over traditional industry assumptions. With newcomers taking the spotlight and love stories still resonating with viewers, Saiyaara has emerged as a testament to YRF’s ability to create surprise hits that defy conventional wisdom.
