Goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw’s Shoe Closet: Her Most Unforgettable Footwear Moments From ‘Sex and the City’ to ‘And Just Like That’

“Men, I may not know. But shoes, shoes I know.”

These are words uttered by Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, in the original “Sex and the City” series. The stylish writer, whose story comes to a close with the final episode of the reboot series “And Just Like That” airing Thursday, is known for many things: she’s a loyal friend, an incisive chronicler of dating in New York City, and a self-confessed shoe addict.

Her longtime love of shoes is rooted in many things, “And Just Like That” costume designer Molly Rogers revealed.

“As a young person in Manhattan when I came here, first of all, when you were a downtown girl around the time of when Madonna hit the clubs, a shoe was a sex symbol,” Rogers told Footwear News. “Downtown girls really got into their shoes and the height of them, if you were cool, and if you were wearing wigs and stuff like that, and you were part of the downtown cool kids.”

Beyond the symbolic meaning of shoes, there’s also the sheer aesthetic appeal of them: “For me, and I guess for Carrie too, seeing shoes is like looking at a display case of candy. They always come in beautiful colors. They have beautiful shapes. And you just want to adorn yourself in them.”

And Carrie’s passion for shoes can really be traced back to her joyful attitude, Rogers believes.

“I think Carrie loves to be happy, and her clothes always reflected that kind of light, happy-go-lucky gal in New York tripping around the city sidewalks in some impossible shoe. I think that’s a real fairy tale that I bought into too, just like Carrie did. I would spend my rent money for a boot or something — I think everybody maybe has, every girl, and guys too now.”

With that said, FN commemorates more than two decades of Carrie Bradshaw‘s relationship with shoes by rounding up some of her most iconic footwear looks of all time.

While these heels aren’t actually visible in the show’s opening credits, the Jimmy Choo Leo sandals are the shoes accompanying Parker’s famous tutu-and-tank top outfit. This set of sandals recently returned to the market thanks to a Jimmy Choo archival collection featuring more than one pair of Carrie-worn shoes.

It’s well known that Carrie historically gravitated toward Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik styles, and Rogers offered her take on why that is.

“My initial observation would be that I see Carrie as a somewhat frustrated ballerina, and she loves to wear crinolines and things like that,” she said. “So I feel like Manolo and Jimmy Choo back in the day, and also now, had that kind of strappy, really feminine princess kind of shoe. Jimmy Choos usually are bedazzled, right, and are for real nightlife gals. So that was a go-to for that part of the story, if she was going out at night. And Manolo was kind of the gal uptown. So I think that fits the beginnings of the show really, really well. It’s funny to me that shoes used to be $400.”

This breezy Jimmy Choo sandal — a pale purple with a feathery toe strap — once held Carrie back as she attempted to catch the Staten Island Ferry, resulting in the iconic line “I lost my Choo!” Dubbed after its serial number 72138, this is another style that returned in the Jimmy Choo archival collection this year.

“A long, long time ago, in 1996 or 7, when Pat[ricia Field] first started her journey with ‘Sex and the City,’ it was all about the Manolo, and it was kind of sacrilegious to have her in anything else because it was such a huge storyline,” Rogers explained of Carrie’s footwear evolution. “And it just wasn’t very realistic to be so tunnel-visioned with one wonderful designer. So I think the writers — what was that Season Three on the Staten Island Ferry, ‘I lost my Choo!’ — so we started introducing the world of shoes and it’s just continued as part of Carrie’s DNA.”

In this memorable shoe-oriented episode exploring the judgment faced by single and childless women, Carrie loses a pair of silver Manolo Blahnik heels — boasting a D’Orsay silhouette and sparkling brooch embellishment against a ruched strap — at a friend’s party after she was forced to remove her shoes. Carrie requests reimbursement from the friend, a former party girl who is now a wife and mother, and faces ridicule for her shopping choices.

In her narration, Carrie says, “The fact is, sometimes it’s really hard to walk in a single woman’s shoes. That’s why we need really special ones now and then to make the walk a little more fun.”

Perhaps the most famous pair of shoes in the entire “Sex and the City” universe is this pair of royal blue satin pumps by Manolo Blahnik — the brand’s Hangisi style — which are worthy of replacing an engagement ring with a crystal-embellished buckle adorning the vamp.

The shoes play a crucial role in Carrie and Big’s romance. After getting cold feet on their wedding day in the “Sex and the City” movie, Big later proposes on one knee in the walk-in closet he had built for her — not with a diamond ring, but with a Manolo Blahnik Hangisi pump.

The now-famous Christian Dior by John Galliano newspaper dress makes an appearance in Season Three of “Sex and the City” and in the second feature film. The second time around, she wears the dress with Christian Louboutin platform peep-toe booties featuring a glittering gold stiletto heel and a black mesh upper with a floral design.

“And Just Like That” picks up on Carrie’s story once she and her friends are in their 50s — but her love of luxury footwear hasn’t diminished with time. In this episode, she wears René Caovilla sandals, a brand known for its sinuous designs; on this style, that design element can be seen wrapping around a stiletto heel. The bright yellow hue serves as a vibrant complement to an outfit heavy with purple hues and more colors.

“In the last season, we had a lot of custom colors done by René Caovilla,” Rogers revealed. “And they’re beautiful shoes, they’re in Bergdorfs, but we got them in colors, like DayGlo colors that would be fun to wear in the summer that they weren’t going to produce — or they’re going to produce after she wears them, I don’t know.”

At the end of the day, a quintessential Carrie Bradshaw shoe can be defined by a couple of elements.

“A strappy open-toed heel — she’s always going to reach for something like that,” Rogers said. “It’s great if it has some rich color to it. We’ve worn mary janes and all kinds of somber, simple shoes, classic shoes. But I think we always reach for some pop of color or bedazzlement when Carrie’s out and about in Manhattan.”
