Last month, Gunmaaster G9 was announced and it led to jubilation among moviegoers. This is because it brings back the super-hit Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005) team – actor Emraan Hashmi, music composer Himesh Reshammiya and director Aditya Datt – together after nearly two decades. The presence of Genelia Deshmukh as the female lead and Aparshakti Khurana as the antagonist also added to the hype. Bollywood Hungama spoke exclusively to Aditya Datt about this film and a lot more.
EXCLUSIVE: Aditya Datt shares EXCITING details about Gunmaaster G9: “It has TRADEMARK Emraan Hashmi stamp; also his FIRST out-and-out action masala film…Himesh Reshammiya will sing one song for Emraan for SURE”
Aditya Datt was the one who encouraged Himesh Reshammiya to turn singer with Aashiq Banaya Aapne. Both worked once again in Aditya’s second film, Dil Diya Hai (2006). When asked why it took so long for them to come back, Aditya explained, “We were not connecting on any film. That was also a time when Himesh sir was everywhere and doing a lot of films. Moreover, I wanted to try working out of my comfort zone. That’s where I collaborated with other music directors and it was a good run. I did ‘Mann Mera’ in Table No 21 (2013); it was sung by Gajendra Verma. ‘Akhiyaan Milavanga’ in Commando 3 (2019) worked. ‘Knock Knock Tera Baap Aaya’ from the same film was also a chartbuster.”
He added, “Himesh sir and I connected again (for Gunmaaster G9). We have been working on this music for the last 6 months now.”
As for getting back with Emraan Hashmi, Aditya Datt revealed, “Emraan and I have been trying to take a film on floors for a while now. But either I would be busy or he didn’t have dates. I made three seasons of Karenjit Kaur – The Untold Story of Sunny Leone (2018), which took a lot of time and later I got busy making Commando 3. Crakk (2024) also took a lot of time. I guess everything is meant to happen at a certain point. With Gunmaaster G9, we both connected on it and things fell into place. It has the trademark Emraan Hashmi stamp. But we are not 20-year-olds anymore! Hence, we have to depict Emraan at his current age. Keeping that in mind, the love story is in sync with today’s day and age, but it has a lot of quirk, passion and action. And he has never done an out-and-out action masala film before. That’s new for me. Moreover, it has a major scope for music.”
Aditya Datt further said, “We also happened to write a character that suits Genelia. Aparshakti is an amazing performer. He’s playing an out-and-out villain, which is again a new territory for him.”
When asked if Himesh Reshammiya will lend his voice for Emraan Hashmi, Aditya Datt replied, “Yes, he’s going to sing for Emraan in one song for sure.”
Speaking of the release plans, he revealed, “Gunmaaster G9 will be released next year. We’ll shoot post monsoons, as there was a flood situation in Uttarakhand. The state authorities have suggested that we shoot in October for safety reasons.”
Aditya Datt continued, “We’ll be shooting mainly in Haridwar and a bit in Dehradun. The shoot will end by November or December, after which we’ll begin the post-production.”
