Meta’s text-based social media app Threads has touched 400 million monthly active users (MAUs), just two years after its launch. The update came from Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who shared the numbers while recalling how the platform started as an idea to rival Twitter, now called X, and has since grown into a space for open conversations.

The latest figure shows the app has added 50 million new monthly users in the past three months. In April this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said Threads had reached 350 million MAUs, which was already an increase from 320 million in January. If the current pace continues, the platform could end the year with well over 100 million new users.

Threads is still behind X in overall monthly users, but the difference is shrinking. The last available numbers from X’s former CEO Linda Yaccarino in April suggested the platform had “nearly 600 million” MAUs, slightly above the 586 million she mentioned in January. Since going private, X has not released independently verified figures.

Fresh data from analytics firm Similarweb shows that Threads is catching up with X in mobile app usage. In June 2025, the Threads app for iOS and Android had 115.1 million daily active users, a jump of 127.8 per cent compared to the same month last year. In the same period, X recorded 132 million daily active mobile users, but its numbers fell 15.2 per cent year-on-year.

On web usage, X continues to have a clear lead. In June, it saw an average of 145.8 million daily visits on browsers globally, while Threads recorded just 6.9 million.

The steady rise of Threads is being linked to the regular rollout of new features over the past year. The platform has added direct messaging independent of Instagram, integration with the fediverse, custom feeds, AI-powered tools, spoiler tags, and a highlight option. These changes, though small individually, are helping improve the user experience and attracting those looking for an alternative to X.

Mosseri, in his post, thanked users for being part of the journey and said there is still a lot of work to be done. “More to come,” he added, hinting at further updates.

The platform is also undergoing a management change. From next month, Connor Hayes will handle daily operations, taking over from Mosseri, though Mosseri will continue to oversee Threads in his wider role at Instagram. It is not yet clear how this leadership change will influence its growth plans.
